7 Gun Control Myths That Just Won’t Die
The Federalist ^ | October 7, 2015 | Sean Davis

Posted on 10/08/2015 11:10:29 AM PDT by Torcert

After every shooting, politicians and activists rush to the cameras or their keyboards to tell people exactly what should be done to stop mass shootings in the future.
Unfortunately, the debate between the two sides is rarely illuminating, as it usually devolves into tired recitations of worn-out talking points about the issue. These talking points are invariably littered with myths and factual inaccuracies. Here are 7 myths about gun control that just won’t die.
1) The ‘Gun Show Loophole’ Allows Anyone, Even Criminals, To Get Guns
In reality, the so-called “gun show loophole” is a myth. It does not exist. There is no loophole in federal law that specifically exempts gun show transactions from any other laws normally applied to gun sales. Not one.
2) Nobody’s Demanding Gun Confiscation
But that’s not true. A number of progressives do actually want to take your guns.
3) Buying A Gun Is As Easy As Buying Groceries
It is not easier to buy a gun than it is to buy a fresh vegetable, or any canned vegetable for that matter. Never in my life have I been required to fill out federal form 4473 and have the cashier run a background check on me before being allowed to buy an onion.
4) Concealed Carriers Don’t Prevent Mass Shootings
5) The Second Amendment Only Applies To Muskets
6) Gun Violence Is Skyrocketing
7) Gun-Free Zones Prevent Gun Violence
Nothing represents wishful thinking in the face of evidence like the proliferation of so-called gun-free zones.

BTW, some additional references on item #2:

2) Nobody’s Demanding Gun Confiscation
Mr. Cuomo, speaking on WGDJ-AM, said: “Confiscation could be an option.

Both Dem Sen. Feinstein and Dem Rep. DeLauia (the really really ugly one) have both stated on the record their ultimate goal is confiscation.

Technically, 1 and 3 are semi-correct when referring to sales between individuals (at least in some states). I can go answer an ad on armslist and buy a firearm directly from an owner in my state without needing to transfer through a gun shop.

As for item 5, I usually like to respond with the 2nd being put in place to enable The People to defend themselves against tyrannical governments, and when the lib asks “where does it say that”, I say right next to the word “muskets” (hat tip to Carol Roth for the original, when she pwned Piers Morgan). Either that, or I point out that using that logic, the 1st amendment free press guarantee only applies to hand-operated printing presses.

It should be clear that is their ultimate goal.

On item #1 I usually ask where the government would get the authority to control the people’s private property in this way.

The impression from #3 is the old stand by - the ‘easy access to guns’ BS

There are a lot more grocery and convenience stores than there are guns stores by far.

“There are a lot more grocery and convenience stores than there are guns stores by far.”

And what a shame that is.

Perhaps we might also want to make recreational drugs illegal to remove that menace.

Just stop the recreational drugs at the border.

If no recreational drugs get into the country then no urban youth could ever get arrested for possessing or selling recreational drugs.

And we ought to do something about alcohol, like ban it nationwide by Constitutional amendment. Alcohol damages livers and can cause birth defects.

It’s not that “they won’t die”... they really been dead for years, but Liberals prop up the corpse “Weekend at Bernie’s”(Sanders?) style and pretend it’s still a valid argument. The whole thing is pure Bernie Sanders. Liberals, like their mass murderer kin, prefer defenseless victims.

4) Concealed Carriers Don’t Prevent Mass Shootings

Of course they do, but here's the problem:
Whenever a concealed carrier does prevent or deter a shooting, there is no solid proof that there would have been a shooting there and then, had he not prevented it.

In the People’s Republic of Maryland, even if you could get a CC permit ... if you shoot and kill a perp ... you are likely to have years of legal troubles ahead of you.

Part of the problem is as you said, cases where a shooting was stopped don’t tend to make the news.

So the leftist false narratives rolls on.

Even I agree that if you take the life of another human being, you have a lot of explaining to do. There are, of course, more than a few instances where you are totally justified....some mostly justified, some probably justified, some perhaps justified, some, not justified, but understandable, and then others.....
