After five years of negotiations, Pacific trade talks near deal

ATLANTA (Reuters) - A dozen Pacific nations closed in on a sweeping free trade pact on Sunday in Atlanta after a breakthrough over how long a monopoly pharmaceutical companies should be given on new biotech drugs.

The issue has pitted the United States, which has argued for longer protections, against Australia and five other delegations who say such measures would strain national healthcare budgets and keep life-saving medicines from patients who cannot afford them.

The terms of that compromise, hammered out after a third all-night round of negotiations between Australia and the United States, still had to find support from other nations such as Chile and Peru as of Sunday afternoon, people involved in the talks said.

The United States has 12 years of exclusivity for the clinical data used in developing drugs like cancer therapy Avastin, developed by Genentech, a division of Roche in order to encourage innovation. Australia insisted on five years of protection to bring down drug prices more quickly.

The two-track compromise would set a minimum threshold of five years during which drug makers would have exclusive rights to clinical data behind new drugs while adding an additional protection of several more years as applications for competing drugs are reviewed, people involved said.

Now that the final details on the Pharm portion of the agreement are resolved, this will proceed rapidly.

This is why the GOP has given Obama everything he wants for the last 5 years. They want this deal. 10's of trillions of dollars are at stake.

It's the Holy Grail for the GOPe.

And they need Obama to deliver 6-8 votes in the Senate, 40 in the House to overcome conservative objections and defections.

This is the source of the Great Mystery.

With St. Raphael Cruz of TPA leading the charge. Our political “leadership”, if it may be called such, sold us down the river.

"Another freaking out sourcing deal"

On the grandest scale ever envisioned by mankind.

It's a plundering of America's Capital Stock.

Investment will pour into the Pacific Rim, as will the jobs.

Capital Stock Adjustment Theory and Economics 101 are clear on that.

While what's left of America's wealth continues to be leveraged to purchase that which was build elsewhere. On credit, of course.

Actually TTIP is worse, right now free trade only pertains to finished goods. TTIP involves services which means the free flow of peoples.

The world is lining up to make their ‘deals’ before Obama and Kerry are out of office.

Brace yourself for some ferocious incoming. I alluded to Cruz’s voting record the other day; I think some people stroked out.

His vote for that ccrap is one reason I no longer support him. Add Corker to it, plus the H1-B increase and fellating the Club for Growth.

I suspected that K street pushed out Bonehead for McCarthy because they feared he could not get this treason ram thru .

They are scrambling the leadership voting because they fear Trumps rise has scared off the Bought off Gope Reps.

We live in a truly corrupt and evil time in our country's history.

"I suspected that K street pushed out Bonehead for McCarthy because they feared he could not get this treason ram thru ."

That's certainly plausible, maybe even likely.

We'll know for sure if they take the vote before or after Boner leaves.

Remember the GOPe talking point about when they shoved giving Zero trade negotiation power down our throat that Obama would not be able to reach a deal before he left office. I knew that was a lie and this proves it.

Anyone who intends to vote for an incumbent (Dem, Rep or other for any office) in the next or any election should first in the mirror and ask themselves do you Really Really like what your government is doing? Do you like the direction the country is headed? I suspect most would answer no and thus should not vote for someone currently in office who contributes to this god awful mess.

And they HAVE to get this done before Trump. Just like giving the Internet away, their only way to stop Trump. They’ll do whatever it takes to stay in power. Boehner fell on his sword for GOPe.
