NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard has located a life ring from a cargo ship that lost power and communications during Hurricane Joaquin and is now the subject of an intense search in the southeastern Bahamas.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Ryan Doss says the life ring was 120 miles northeast of Crooked Island. That's about 70 miles northeast of the last known position of the El Faro before it lost contact with authorities with 33 people on board.

Doss says the crew of a C-130 airplane spotted the life ring Saturday and a helicopter crew confirmed it was from the El Faro. It has not been retrieved.

If the ship was listing and cargo shifted to the side of the list, it simply could have turned over and sunk very quickly with no change to launch lifeboats; life rafts with quick releases should float to the surface but they may be difficult to find.

A U.S. flag ship, the Poet, with a cargo of grain disappeared one night in a storm-the cargo could have shifted and the ship may have turned turtle and sunk very quickly. I don’t believe anybody or anything including an oil slick was ever found.

I heard today that there was 33 aboard. Just like the Edmond Fitzgerald.

When you lose power in a hurricane, the end can come very suddenly. The captain should order all personnel non-essential to the recovering power effort to man the lifeboats and prepare to abandon ship.

I’ve been keeping up with this story and just saw this update.

Even if they’d stopped the flooding, they were at a 15 degree list and propellers out..no way to keep up with the swells. It doesn’t sound good for this ship.

Godspeed men of the sea..

This is a major American maritime disaster that has been unfolding since Thursday yet it is barely registering in the news. I wonder why.

The ship was without propulsion and listing in very bad seas. Not too hard to figure out what happened.

Such news incites prayer. Christian prayer.

Our media would ONLY be interested in that if there were some straight, white males to bash, SOMEwhere, SOMEhow.
OR if it was a ship with many Christians, ESPECIALLY Catholics and Evangelical Christians. THEN they could blame THEM for the disaster.

Man, I can’t even imagine trying to ride out a storm with NO power. I’m thinking it capsized or rode to high and broke apart.... Edmund Fitzgerald...

I’ve been watching it too and I can’t believe there’s so little interest in it. Those poor people are out there and nobody cares.

I saw the movie The Martian last night, and it all depended on people really caring that this guy was lost on Mars. But in reality, I don’t think that anybody now cares about finding the lost.

The media shrugs. I pray for them, as should we all. And for our brave men and women at sea.

a ship is basically a big, hollow ball that displaces more water than it weighs. If the ship is well sealed, how can it ever sink???????

Reports are that last word from the ship is that it had lost power, was taking on water and had a 15 degree list.

A ship is designed to go bow first into waves. Without power, the wind will tend to turn the ship broadside to the waves. The waves will in short order break the ship apart, or roll it over.
