Suppressors were regulated to help control poaching during the depression. That, and they were trying to get rid of civilian gun ownership.

--the "silencer " stuff came out of one of the first big anti-gun crazes in the 'thirties--Roosevelt's attorney general saw that there was political hay to be made in gun-banning--machine guns , of course had made the headlines with the likes of Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde, ,etc.,--(most of them stolen from armories) so the National Firearms Act was passed---with "silencers" thrown in also--

--Homer Cummings even admitted that a complete ban would not be constitutional (Second Amendment) but that taxing something out of existence would be---don't think he would have tried that with printing presses---

There’s no good reason they couldn’t be sold just like any other firearm. Penalties could be applied if used in a crime. It all goes back to the firearms act of 1934.

This sounds like something Trump / Cruz etc. should get behind and eliminate.

I read in Germany it is considered bad form (gauche behavior if you will) if you come to the range without a supressor. It is more about helping save the hearing of your fellow ranger shooters...

Do you need to carry a copy of your tax stamp when out and about with your can? I have heard yes and no. Some say an LEO can demand proof, others say it is a tax document that would need a subpoena.

Can you cite references to those arrests? It is perfectly legal to manufacture your own suppressor, so long as you go through the BATF hoops. The form for personal manufacture is the Form 1. If it was illegal to even discuss it, then there are thousands of felons right now discussing it on several class III forums.
As to a question posed by another poster about there was ever a case where a criminal used one. There is currently an open investigation into the murder of a prosecutor in Seattle, where a suppressor was purportedly used.

It is a good idea to have a copy with you at all times. I **believe** but am not certain that the only people who can “officially” harass you about your items are Federal officials. But IANAL and need to double check that.

Personally, I am going to scan my Tax Stamps into all of my computers and then also email myself a copy which an be accessed from my phone anytime/anywhere. In addition, I will carry a physical hard copy wherever I go when I have the suppressor with me. The original copy will remain in the gun safe.

This is a great thread devoted to the NFA process in the state of PA.....it may deviate some from state to state, but not much:

And of course how could I post that page without posting the gun babes thread? (NSFW):

"It is a myth that the ATF has any additional powers over you for owning an NFA item"

I wasn't insinuating that they did. I won't even buy a gun from a dealer because of NICS. Government has no business knowing my business. Sooner or later, I have to assume the data will be used for other than proclaimed purposes.

that's the first case I've ever heard of with a suppressor being used. It's obviously not all that common.

"Can you cite references to those arrests?"

I couldn't remember details so I went hunting. I think was I was remembering were the cases of ATF arresting people at gun shows for simply discussing full auto conversions and calling it conspiracy. I'm coming up empty on the suppressor issue so I think I had them blended together in my ancient memories.
