Linking the defunding of Planned Parenthood to a government funding bill is "an exercise in futility," according to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
The Kentucky Republican lawmaker, in an interview with Politico Friday, says he'll support instead a plan to fund the government into December with no conditions.
"It's an exercise in futility," McConnell says of the Planned Parenthood defunding effort. "I'm anxious to defund Planned Parenthood" but "the honest answer of that is that's not going to happen until you have a president who has a similar view."
"It's better to be honest with the American people and say, 'That won't get it done.'"
According to Politico, McConnell favors a strategy that will include a short-term funding bill to buy time to negotiate a longer-term spending measure and separately, a vote this month to federally ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
GOP lawmakers have called for the defunding of Planned Parenthood in the wake of hidden-camera videos showing officials brokering the distribution of fetal tissue to medical research.
But McConnell said either a Democratic minority would block the effort, or President Barack Obama would veto a bill even if it passed the Senate.
"Groups who deeply are concerned about the issue realize this [Planned Parenthood strategy] isn't going to get that done," McConnell said.
"What we are going to do is move to the pain-capable [abortion] bill sometime this month and see how people feel about that," he said referring to a 20-week abortion ban proposal.

DEFUNDING Mitch McConnell is extremely DOABLE....
That done.. Planned UN-Parenthood better escape to HELL where it came from..
“If Bhoner and Mitch had been replaced with freshman powerless Dems, we would NOT have this. THEY CAUSED this.”
Agree that they caused this. Seeing them lose their seats, while deeply satisfying and of great morale value, probably would not have changed much. The gop scum would have replaced them with Cornyn and McCarthy. Same toilet bowl, different floaters.
Possibly. But that replacing would have rocked them back a bit and MAYBE stopped the full bull run of liberalism. Slowed it at minimum.
McConnell continues to confirm my view that he is not a leader and is harming America and the republican party. He is complicit in assisting our Kenyan in Chief in transforming America. He should be removed as majority leader in the senate.
“Gotta have the House Gotta have the Senate Gotta have the White House Gotta have the Court Gotta have the media. When will it end?”
Never. Because they’re playing on the same team as the ‘rats.
There will always be an excuse as to why the gop scum can’t seemingly accomplish anything. The problem is they ARE accomplishing something: keeping conservatives and nationalists bogged down in electoral politics through a combination of duplicity and feigned ineptness. As I pointed out up thread, no organization is as stupid as the gop seems to be. So there has to be another explanation. The simplest and most logical explanation is that the gop is not an opposition political party. Occam’s razor.
Once you start to look at the gop scum through the lens of duplicity and collaboration, what they’re doing makes a great deal more sense.
If McConnell was a union general in the Civil War, he would have squandered American lives, opportunities for victory on the battlefield, and would have been sacked by President Lincoln.
“Possibly. But that replacing would have rocked them back a bit and MAYBE stopped the full bull run of liberalism. Slowed it at minimum.”
Not likely. We’re dealing with the political equivalent of a hydra. Cut off one head, two more grow to replace it. Set them back on their heels for a moment, they come back twice as forcefully.
Three card monte was not designed to be won by the marks.
The only reason I say that is Cantor. It rattled them bad. Had we backed it up with the gruesome twosome we ‘might’ have made progress for us rather than Obama.
Looking for McConnell’s testicles, even using a magnifying glass, is an exercise in futility.
He is a liar. Bush was pro-life and he had a GOP Congress for a couple years that showed no inclination to end funding of PP.
McConnell and Boner are ball-less traitors.
Norm: I’m a Virginian. The gop is trying to rehabilitate Cantor. He’s heading up Jebito’s campaign here. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s trundled out as candidate for governor in 2017; he has been named as a potential candidate and jas a good chance if Cuccinelli decides not to give it another shot. I saw a poll that indicates his being in second position for the gop nomination.
His “penalty” for losing as majority leader was to get a job paying about 15 times as much. I expect gop scum to start lining up to be primaried if they can expect to be treated like Cantor.
They ALL get that when they leave. It’s not new or unique.
It was a hit and they were stunned. We did not press the advantage and again like utter morons, went ‘lesser evil’ and restored all the damage we had done them.
In stead of a statesmen we have a lazy turd leading the Senate.
I must be missing something. I understand why “de-funding” might be difficult as a stand-alone piece of legislation.
I don’t understand why it would be difficult to simply not include it in the next budget. Don’t “de-fund” it, simply don’t fund it.
Obama has video of Boner and McConnell in bed with little boys.
Pinky McConnell.. “Mr. Chicken$hit!”
This is what they’ve been doing for the past 7 years and more..
Every time I see this guy and the others saying anything.. I get angry all over again.. and every time they do this, Trump’s numbers go up.
If Trump was not in the race, there’d be nothing to count on to change anything. The things they find fault in Trump on... is what will defeat this GOP nightmare.
Then do it. Attach it to every bill you send up to the $#!+head in Chief.
Make the bastard veto it ... if 0bama wants to shut the government down over Planned Barrenhood, that's his problem.
