In his first three nights as host of CBS’ Late Show, Stephen Colbert has made it clear he has no intention of pretending to be neutral. About anything. His emotional encounter Thursday night with Joseph R. Biden focused primarily on the Vice President’s experience of tragedy, most recently the May death from brain cancer of his son Beau, and his wife and infant daughter in a 1972 auto accident.
It was riveting television, at once compassionate and revealing, and it almost incidentally lifted the issue of faith to a far higher level in the national conversation than any of the fatuous debates and sparring among the announced candidates have done so far.
“Everybody likes Joe Biden,” Colbert said, introducing his first guest of the evening. “I think it’s because when we see you, we think we’re seeing the real Joe Biden…We’re inspired by the way you have responded” to unimaginable loss. Biden, obviously moved, paid tribute to Beau’s grace and determination to take care of those who would survive him, especially his father. “I never heard my son complain,” he said.
And when Colbert asked, “How has your faith helped you respond?” Biden, a self-described devout Catholic, answered, “I feel self-conscious talking about it,” noting that many people — including Colbert himself — had dealt with tragedy. “Loss is serious, but there are so many other people going through this,” he said, adding that few of them had the “incredible support” he himself benefitted from. “I marvel at the ability of people to absorb hurt, and most do it with an incredible sense of empathy.” He added that quote from the existentialist philosopher Soren Kierkegaard had been a comfort to him: “Faith sees best in the dark.”

Late night TV has become nothing more than a place for politicians to go to fart. Kind of like the housewares aisle at Walmart.

The tragedy(s) in Biden’s life are like all “old-time” Democrats...a lesson taught from the Mobsters.
Did Colbert ask how Hunter Biden was able to get an age deferment and a special commission into the US Navy, into a PR position that wasn’t particularly understaffed? Or how Biden was dishonorably discharged after only a month for drug abuse?

Biden may be an asshat but he is likeable. That is more than I can say for some of the current crop on the other side.
Meanwhile, Colbert’s ratings are already cratering; after attracting 6.6 million viewers for his debut, he was tied with Jimmy Fallon in the demo by the second night. Obviously, there was going to be a drop-off from the first show, but that plunge indicates that a number of viewers tuned in, didn’t like what they and watched something else on Wednesday.
As I’ve said before, the only saving grace for Colbert is the fact that he inherited a #3 show, so CBS will give him a couple of years to make it work (at a minimum). Additionally, the network can actually make more off the show with Colbert behind the desk because his salary is less than half of what they were paying Letterman.
One more thing: CBS was keeping tabs on how reruns of the Mentalist (and other dramas) fared in the months between Letterman’s departure and Colbert’s debut. Not because the network has any plans to bring back the show, but to see how many folks bothered to watch. If Colbert tanks, CBS may pull the plug on at least one (or both) of its late night talk and resume airing old movies and reruns, as they did for many years in the 70s and 80s. That type of programming costs virtually nothing, and if 1-2 million people tuning in, the network can generate as much ad revenue as they did with the talk shows.
If Biden and Hillary are in the race I see Sanders going 3rd party. Bye bye 2016 chances.
