Coalition of the clueless: From Hewitt to Trump to Christie, total ignorance of the Mideast

One of the reasons the so-called "neo" conservatives are so desperate to deep-six Donald Trump's candidacy is that he has made it plain he won't necessarily be taking their orders if elected president.

I suspect that's why radio entertainer Hugh Hewitt recently hit Trump with those silly "gotcha" questions about Mideast leaders.

Trump didn't know the names of four leaders but said he has plenty of time to bone up on that sort of thing between now and Jan. 20, 2017.

As for Hewitt, what's his excuse? He's been wrong on everything about the Mideast for more than a decade. In 2006, for example, he called the Iraq War "the wisest decision" George W. Bush had made as president. By then it was already obvious that removing the secular dictator of Iraq had empowered both Sunni extremists allied with Al Qaeda and Shia extremists allied with Iran.

Traditional conservatives like Pat Buchanan warned against the war and decried its aftermath on the same site that hosts Hewitt's parroting of neocon nonsense.

Yet recently Hewitt's been calling for the application of "the Bush doctrine" of removing secular dictators to Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad.

But that's not the biggest error this "third-rate announcer" – as Trump called him – made in his session with Trump. That was conflating all four of the groups he named as if all had the same aims in the Mideast.

They don't. In fact the Iranian Quds Force is at this very moment attacking the Islamic State. That's more important than knowing the names of the leader of each group. ...

The worst offender in this regard is our own Chris Christie, who in his foreign-policy kickoff speech last May committed a gaffe that dwarfs anything Trump said to Hewitt. Here's what he said:

Zero doesn’t know anything about the Middle East. Start with him and then move to the Congress. Everyone who votes for the Iran treason, must be voted out for destroying our security, IMO.

Think of it as gang warfare for territory. Alliances are fluid. The ultimate goal is control, power. The usual human goals.

As Giraldi notes, there's no evidence whatever that the IED's used against Americans came from Iran. The troops of the former Iraqi army, which George W. Bush disbanded in another move applauded by the neocons, knew perfectly well how to fashion the devices.

This article probably makes some good points, but the above is at odds with what's been reported as fact for years: that Iran supplied many of the IED's used to target Americans.

From the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 until today, I doubt Iran knew what to expect from the US presence in Iraq: a long term US presence, an Iraqi coalition government that worked, a friendly Shiite dominated Iraq, or whatever.

Iran could not have known what to expect since 2003, and the author jumps to the conclusion he needed to add to his overall theme. And he sure didn't establish that Iran never played any part in targeting US troops in Iraq.

Well, he did have the Pentagon’s anti-terrorism unit delete about 10 terabytes of information they had on ME terrorists.

When the new administration takes over, it’ll be like starting over on the WOT.
