The Five Plausible GOP Candidates (Bush, Cruz, Kasich, Rubio and Walker)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | August 11, 2015 | William A. Galston

Posted on 08/11/2015 4:41:51 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

After their first presidential debates, it is time for Republicans to get serious. Donald Trump won’t be their nominee. Neither will Ben Carson. Nor will any of the men in the 5 p.m. undercard event last week. Despite Carly Fiorina’s strong performance, it is hard to believe that the GOP would turn to someone who was fired as Hewlett-Packard ’s CEO in 2005 after a tenure charitably described as controversial, and whose only run for elective office resulted in a landslide loss in 2010 to Sen. Barbara Boxer in California.

There are only five candidates with a plausible path to the Republican nomination: two sitting senators ( Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz), two sitting governors ( Scott Walker and John Kasich), and a former governor ( Jeb Bush). They represent a choice among very different persons, but also—and more fundamentally—between competing strategies for the future of the Republican Party.

First, the candidates as individuals. Ted Cruz is running as the tea party’s Mr. Conservative—aggressively antigovernment except for national defense, with an explicit appeal to Christian social conservatives. John Kasich is this generation’s compassionate conservative, who cites his faith as justification for expanding Medicaid and extending “unconditional love” to gays and lesbians. Scott Walker is the fighting conservative who fires supporters’ hopes that he will stick it to the liberals in Washington, as he did to public-sector unions in Wisconsin....

LOL.... really! They are in deep denial. There’s a reason Trump won’t give up the third party option. You just don’t know what people that desperate as the GOPe are will do.

Racist Wall St Journal gobsmacks the only black
as it also ignores the choice of the people, so far.

No wonder Wall St Journal is tied at the navel
.... to the Indian Senator, Eliz. Warren.

Kasich? What is with all this Kasich touting? He’s a Rust Belt Christie. Never saw a federal program he didn’t want to sign up for.

Just the WSJ pushing the main stream GOPe. Another part of the “Washington Cartel” laying out in plain view. It’s too easy for them to write off Cruz and Carson.

They put Cruz in there to give themselves cover.

I have noticed the weasels that have been serial Cruz bashers since the shutdown now all of sudden are slinging Cruz’s praises to avoid being labeled part of the establishment as they try to take Trump down.

Once Trump is out, they would laugh and direct all fire at Cruz. These people are so predictable.

Galston had a melt-down the other day about Trump:

History proves that Donald Trump's 'unpresidential' behavior is not a roadblock to the White House

....

“There’s a difference between unpopularity and arrogant ignorance,” Mr. Glaston says in an interview. “John Adams was a statesman and a scholar, and whatever Donald Trump is, he’s neither.”

...

“Donald Trump is not electable,” says Galston. “Donald Trump represents the intersection of anger and celebrity."

Galston explains that “There are a lot of people who are angry and feel repressed by changes on government and society and Trump is saying what a lot of angry older people, mainly of the white and male persuasion, are quietly thinking, but don’t dare say. So he’s saying it out loud and getting away with it – sort of - and it makes them feel good.”

“Andrew Jackson wasn’t a warm and fuzzy guy. He overthrew the establishment and was arguably our first populist president, but he had a lot more in the bank [politically, than Trump],” Galston says. “But Donald Trump is so far over the line, I don’t even know where to begin.”

“The American people, above all, want a president who cares about them,” Galston concludes. “And if there’s anything manifest about Donald Trump it’s that he only cares about himself.”

Galston worked for Clinton, Gore, Mondale, and long ago independent candidate John Anderson.

People should not underestimate the GOPe or Jeb Bush! The Republican Party has the game rigged (with open primaries) against conservatives. Jeb will likely have strong support in blue states. Do not count him out. He’s got the money and support to McCain us!

He’s Plan D for the GOPe, if John Ellis, Scott and Marco fall by the wayside.
