RIO DE JANEIRO Thirteen rowers on the 40-member U.S. team came down with stomach illness at the World Junior Rowing Championships a trial run for next summers Olympics and the team doctor said she suspected it was due to pollution in the lake where the competition took place.
The event took place amid rising concerns about the water quality at venues for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, now less than a year away.
The Americans were by far the hardest hit at the regatta that concluded over the weekend, with reports of vomiting and diarrhea. Other teams in the competition reported some illnesses, according to World Rowing, the sports governing body, but those were about as expected at an event that featured more than 500 young rowers.
On July 30, The Associated Press published an independent analysis of water quality that showed high levels of viruses and, in some cases, bacteria from human sewage in all of Rios Olympic and Paralympic water venues, including the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, where the rowing competition took place.

That’s OK. The IOC lined their pockets. That’s the important thing.
They should have trained on an EPA certified safe river like the Animas.
Must be like Mexico. Don’t drink the water. Tequila is better for you.
Dangit, beat me to it.
Just another barrier to success. Suck it up and train. We have all heard if altitude training for sports. Now they have to add third-world water to their training tables. (Slight tinge of sarcasm.)
The EPA has a solution: Move the qualifying events to the Animas River in Colorado!
Row in it, don’t drink it dummies? wow.
There ought to be an app. ;-)
Brazil is a crony socialist utopia with near 90% tax rates. Bacteria and human feces in the waterways is expected.
They should all wear haz-mat suits with mini air conditioners attached when they row.
Then have the coach tell the media that it has NOTHING to do with the condition or quality of the river, but simply being used to guard against STDs.
not the lake water..... it was the ice cubes
Just hope the bikinis worn by the gals at Ipanema dont dissolve in the water..
Send the EPA. Quick!
Brazil and almost all Latin American countries are far worse than Mexico in most respects, including crime.
I really don’t have much pity for people that subject themselves to open sewers for fame.
When the Olympic team is in an ICU with brain eating parasites and hepatitis, they can look at pictures of the event they never made it to.
And the IOC and corporate sponsors will surely ‘feel’ bad about it. I’ just know it...
Don’t worry, though. The U.S. will catch up with Brazil soon enough.
One year out we always here the next Olympics will be a complete and horrible disaster... then it isn’t. Yeah the water is a mess now, so is ours in New Mexico, both will probably be fixed by the Olympics.
