LOUISVILLE, Ky. (UPI) -- Despite a July vote to end a ban on openly gay adult leaders, former gay Boy Scout leader Greg Bourke was still prohibited from being in the high ranks of a Louisville church-sponsored troop.
Bourke, who was active in pushing for the legalization of same-sex unions, was told Tuesday that he could not be a Boy Scout leader for a troop in a Catholic parish named Our Lady of Lourdes. This comes after the Boy Scouts of America National Executive Board's decision on July 27 to lift its ban on openly gay adult leaders and employees, with 79 percent voting in favor of the resolution.
"No youth may be denied membership to our organization on the basis of sexual orientation alone," said national president Robert M. Gates in a Youtube video. However, the new policy still allows church-sponsored units to choose unit leaders based on their beliefs, even if these get in the way of allowing homosexual individuals to assume leadership roles. Bourke, who was forced to resign in 2012 when he announced that he was gay, said that his pastor told him he could not be a leader again despite the new policy.
Bourke told WLKY News that he was deeply disappointed about the church's decision to deny him his former role. A mother whose Boy Scout child was formerly under Bourke's leadership said Bourke is everything a Boy Scout leader should be and that without him, her son's experience will be different.
Our Lady of Lourdes spokeswoman Cecilia Price told USA Today said the institution has the right and responsibility to choose leaders whose character and conduct are consistent with the teachings of the church.

How about a Bible to read and get back to his job, tending his flock.
Gates did not specify what youth, so c'mon girls get a move on. Pronto.
The Boy Scout decision very specifically allows church based groups to continue not allowing Gay leaders if it is against their doctrine.
This was specific so that the Catholic Church, the LDS, and certain Evangelical and other Churches would continue sponsoring Boy Scout troops.
We all knew that the BSA did this so they would not lose a huge majority of their troops, but we also knew that the Gay activists would challenge it as quickly as possible.
I expect we will see a Gay LDS member do the same in the near future.
I do know that the LDS Church is prepared to leave the BSA and institute its on program within the Church.
It certainly looks that way from all my sources as well.
The Catholic Churches for Western North Dakota (Bismarck Diocese) have already done so.
What has started as a trickle will turn into a flood if the GAYstapo doesn't back off.
And they won't back off.
That SUCKS...... or soon will... (pun intended)..
No they will not.
There is agenda is not to help the BSA. It is either to radically alter it, or destroy it outright.
For those of us who have revered and cherished the BSA...they have already destroyed it.
And Robert Gates is presiding over it.
it is clear to me that he, and those pushing this agenda do not care a whit if the BSA losses 85% of its troops. Ultimately they are going to use the good BSA name and alter the operation of the organization to the point where it becomes a haven for gay scouts and gay leaders.
A crying shame.
But the LDS Church, most of the Catholics, many protestants, and evangelicals...as well as others...will continue to do scouting under their own umbrellas and that majority of boys will still have places to get the education and the training that the Scouts provide.
In the bigger/broader picture, our nation is going down a path where ultimately a higher power, our Father in Heaven will weigh in. Just as He will one day weigh in on abortion.
I'll bet.
I see the symbolics. Are the parents so far gone as to let their boys join the troop?
Not better. Not closer to what God would want. Just different. Prayers for this child.

Pedophile groomer upset.
That would be a believable position if each scouting unit were an island unto itself. But they are not.
Every troop interacts extensively with other scouting units at council-wide camporees, jamborees, specialty camps, and the OA scouting honors group. These are numerous opportunities for homosexualized troops to inculcate their values among the general scouting community at large. This is an unavoidable peril.
You can't pour a thimbleful of sewage sludge into a corner of a barrel of fresh water and then think you can safely drink from the other edge.
Louisville, eh?
Why not just hog tie him, and leave him on the grounds of Fort Campbell, on tank training day?
Or, toss him over the monitored fence line at Fort Knox?
With these large churches, they will be replicating the entire gambit of Scout activities, right up to national jamboree type gatherings.. It is not only believable, it is in place and ready to happen.
I have worked for several decades within the Boy Scouts as a Scout Master, a member of the advisory boards, and as the advancement chairman reviewing the boys progress against the various scout levels up to and including Eagle scouts and their Eagle Projects.
Large Churches like the LDS and Catholic have the capability of replicating the whole program within their churches and that is where they are prepared to go.
As to the BSA Executive Board and the provision in their current decision for Churches to continue not using gay leaders...it is a fact. It is just not going to be able to hold because of the gay activists.
Any religious institution or person who remains in the BSA is implicitly supporting homosexuals having access to young males.
I have effectively submitted my resignation from the BSA by notifying National, Council and District to remove me from any and all mailing lists.
My “resignation” is effective 31 December when I am no longer a registered member...24 years as a BSA leader and my concerns, inquiries and inputs mattered not to anyone in the organization.
National “permitted” the exemption for one reason and one reason only. Money.
It’s not about being respecters of beliefs.
