Schumer: Why I’m opposing the Iran nuclear deal

Why I’m opposing the Iran nuclear deal

By Charles Schumer

I’ve spent the last three weeks carefully studying the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. I’ve decided I must oppose the agreement and will vote yes on a motion of disapproval.

I examined this deal in three parts: nuclear restrictions on Iran in the first 10 years, nuclear restrictions after 10 years and non-nuclear components and consequences. In each case, I’ve asked: Are we better off with the agreement or without it?

In the first 10 years, there are serious weaknesses. First, inspections are not “anywhere, anytime”; the 24-day delay before we can inspect is troubling. More troubling is the fact that the US can’t demand inspections unilaterally. And the “snapback sanctions” provisions seem cumbersome and difficult to use.

Those who argue for the agreement say it’s better to have an imperfect deal than nothing. When you consider only this first portion of the deal, that line of thinking is plausible, but the weaknesses still make this argument less compelling.

Second, we must evaluate how this deal would restrict Iran’s nuclear development after 10 years.

Supporters argue that a future president would be in no weaker a position than today to prevent Iran from racing to the bomb. That discounts the current sanctions regime. After 15 years of relief from sanctions, Iran would be stronger financially and better able to advance a robust nuclear program.

More important, the agreement would allow Iran, after 10 to 15 years, to be a nuclear-threshold state with the blessing of the world community. It would have a green light to be as close, if not closer, to possessing a nuclear weapon than it is today. And the ability to thwart Iran would have less moral and economic force.

Problem is, there won’t be enough dems to vote for not doing this deal than rhinos voting to press on with it.

Obama figures his veto will stand, it’s safe for Schumer to vote nay.

He wants more camera time to make up for the time he has lost.

Probably. But the way he got it (not a Treaty) means it can be undone if we ever get a Congress and President with some balls.

I don’t understand how this agreement doesn’t qualify as a treaty requiring 67 votes to ratify. Any agreement among nations is a treaty. Period. Obama needs 67 votes to ratify.

all this means is Chucky knows there are not enough votes to override a presidential veto ...so it doesn’t matter what he does or says

“Schumer: Why I’m opposing the Iran nuclear deal”

Because they dont have the votes to prevent the deal from going through so the powers that be gave you their permission to vote against it so that you can protect and save your political hide?

For all his many and horrific flaws, Schumer has generally been pretty tough on terrorism, like when he went hard for additional shipping container security. Being a NYC Jew, I think he has a pretty solid understanding of the threat. It's his only good point.

Okay...I’ll take your word for it. It is a consolation that some of them still have some scruples I guess.

Two days ago, David Harris of the AJC came out with a reasoned position not to accept the deal and urged Congress to do the same. Once the AJC nixed the deal, I knew Schumer would have to back out of support.

Of course, behind the scenes, he's lobbying every Democrat to support the deal.

I’ll be very surprised if he didn’t say this, knowing full well that it would pass with or without his vote.

Excepting the money has been released....and you won’t get that back...and all the other countries are wheelin’ dealin’ trade agreements. You can’t put it back in the bottle.
