Navy won’t rule out charges against Chattanooga defender who fired back at gunman

Honestly, this development seemed so bizarre that it screamed “hoax!” Apparently, though, the US Navy investigation into the mass shootings in Chattanooga might result in charges against one officer who returned fire in defense of his comrades. No charges have been filed as of yet, but the Navy released a statement in which they declined to proscribe the possibility of discipline for Lt. Cmdr. Timothy White:

A Navy official told Fox News that punishing a lieutenant commander who used an unauthorized weapon to fire back at the Chattanooga gunman who shot and killed five service members could not be “completely ruled out,” and two high-profile former military officers, including presidential candidate Jim Webb, say the Navy is at least seriously considering charging the man.

The Navy said in a statement that it had not charged any service members with an offense at the present time.

“Stories of Navy personnel being charged with an offense are not true,” the statement said. “There is still a long way to go in reviewing the facts of this tragic incident, but at this time we can confirm no service member has been charged with an offense.”

Military personnel are not allowed to carry weapons inside military recruiting and reserve stations. That ban is now facing scrutiny following the July 16 rampage by an Islamic extremist that killed five military members in Tennessee.

The issue here is that the Pentagon and the last few administrations want recruiting centers to be gun-free zones. They gave what amounts to be a lawful order, even if it’s a stupid order. As long as the violation of the order didn’t get public attention, the Pentagon could have tolerated it, but the high-profile exposure puts them in a tough position. Discipline within the military depends on obeying orders, and having a mid-ranking officer violating this one could very well have a domino effect — if Congress, the White House, and the Pentagon plan to continue its foolish policy of making military recruiting stations gun-free zones.

On the other hand … come on. I have to agree with my friend (and retired Army officer) Pete Hegseth here. Lt. Cmdr. White acted with courage under fire to protect his post and the people within it from an Islamist terrorist intent on slaughtering as many people as possible. He put his life at risk to do so, continuing the finest tradition of our armed forces, defending America from a perfidious attack. The solution here is to give Lt. Cmdr. White a medal for his bravery under fire, and assign him a low-level rebuke along with it for violating the gun-free zone policy in a manner that won’t hamper his career. Discipline and justice will both be satisfied.

Maybe they should go back and investigate Spruance, Nimitz, Arleigh Burke, etc.

Maybe they should disarm the Pacific fleet, just in case.

Our system is breaking down and is failing. If the Navy charges and convicts this guy it demonstrates the demise of this country and it’s military.

By the same standards, though, Hillary should be in Leavenworth for her crimes against the People of the United States

If Ronald Reagan were president, Lt. Cmdr. White would have already received a medal, presented to him by the president in the Oval Office. A promotion to full commander would soon follow.

As it is, White will not be charged. The public uproar would be too great. But he certainly will receive no medal, and his career is effectively over.

The message: come and kill our defenseless military personnel...and if one should be bold enough to fight back, we’ll prosecute the rebellious bastard.

Upside-down world is Obama’s dream, and he’s got brainless stooges running his plan all over the place.

As a veteran it pains me to say that if I had a service age son I would discourage him from joining under this pathetic regime.

Does anyone know what location this was? Was he at the strip mall armed service career center or the Navy Reserve Center.

I watched Greta yesterday on her special and details of the shooting were as vague as the first day. This is what I found out at Wiki:

The shootings began shortly after 10:30 a.m. at the Armed Forces Career Center in a strip mall located on Lee Highway. The Center recruited personnel for branches of the United States military, including the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, and the Tennessee National Guard. There, Abdulazeez fired 25 to 30 shots[5] into the office from inside a silver rental Ford Mustang convertible,[6] wounding a U.S. Marine. He then escaped and led members of the Chattanooga Police Department on a pursuit.[7]

Abdulazeez drove seven miles (11 km) to a U.S. Navy Reserve center on Amnicola Highway in Chattanooga,[8][9] where he rammed his vehicle through a security gate.[7] He drove to one of the center’s buildings and first fired at it, then charged inside and continued firing, fatally wounding a U.S. Navy sailor. Abdulazeez then exited the building through the back and entered a fenced motor pool area, where he shot more people. Three to five minutes after the second shooting began,[10] he reentered the building, where he fired upon responding police officers and was fatally shot by them.

Let them go to courts martial. It is a violation of DoD policy NOT to arm those who are targets. ALL uniforms in these United States are targets and their Commanding Officers are derelict in their duties by not arming those in thier commands. This will not bode well for the chain of command at that installation.

You mean basically a repeat of the Billy Mitchell court martial.

Really?
Do you all have some mental difficulty that prevents you from grasping the situation?
An Islamic terrorist (people we are at war with) attack a Military establishment killing several military members, this military member fired back with a personal weapons because the military is to ignorant to arm its own troops against attack. How long does it take you to read that and understand what happened?

In a sane world, we would be discussing his potential medal, not his potential charges.
