The Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday that Houston City Council must repeal the city's equal rights ordinance or place it on the November ballot.
The ruling comes three months after a state district judge ruled that opponents of Houston's contentious non-discrimination ordinance passed last year failed to gather enough valid signatures to force a repeal referendum.
"We agree with the Relators that the City Secretary certified their petition and thereby invoked the City Council's ministerial duty to reconsider and repeal the ordinance or submit it to popular vote," the Texas Supreme Court wrote in a per curiam opinion. "The legislative power reserved to the people of Houston is not being honored."
The city's equal right ordinance bans discrimination based not just on sexual orientation and gender identity but also, as federal laws do, sex, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, religion, disability, pregnancy and genetic information, as well as family, marital or military status. Houston City Council has 30 days to repeal the ordinance or place it on the November ballot.

My understanding of this from afar is that the Houston city council passed this ordinance, it was not popular and petitions were submitted to void the ordinance, there were legal shenanigans by the mayor which included her actions against the pastors mentioned above, ending with the Texas Supreme Court ruling repeal the ordinance or put it on the ballot.
I'd appreciate anything Texas freepers have to say about this local ordinance and Texas Supreme Court ruling.
I’m a Txian, but I don’t know about this.
I also would appreciate some reliable info.
Restore the legislative process....even if Republican politicians had rather just 'go along.'
We live in the suburbs by choice but can shed a little light on this issue. This is certainly going to make the fall election interesting and should guarantee increased voter turnout. Mayor Porker has been term limited but this is her bill and I would think that come hell or high water it will be on the ballot and she is announcing loudly that the LGBT community will win! Not sure about where the most two prominent candidates running for Mayor stand on this issue - one is Black and a member of the City Council, one Hispanic was the former County Sheriff. Apparently the straw that finally broke the camel’s back was the part of the ordinance that resulted in everyone being able to use the same bathroom, regardless of sexual orientation.
Houston is not on sound footing either with their finances or infrastructure, a sanctuary city, rising crime rate, massive increase in apartment building and dwelling, lots of new Yankees and has a huge LGBT community which includes Mayor Porker and her “female spouse”. Just the normal every day problems that come with being the fourth largest city in the U.S.
Time to hide, watch and pray!
HERO...
letting men share bathrooms with your daughters is called HERO
leftists are sick
Thank you. It will be interesting to see what happens.
You’re welcome. Wish I had more info but we have our own issues here in the suburbs. City Council member is very upset because he wants tax money that he thinks would come from allowing bars and taverns that don’t have at least 51% of income from food. Apparently they tried to circulate petition to get signatures to put it on the ballot this year but they couldn’t get enough registered voters to sign on. Glad it failed. We get enough fallout from Houston garbage flowing downhill toward the Gulf.
Since many of the people against Mayor Porker’s ordinance are Black will be interesting to see what side Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee comes down on. Maybe it will be enough to keep her away from the camera and her mouth shut for a while.
Lesbian Mayor Porkor must be a big hit with the Muslim community.
Thank you very much.
Do you have an approx. muslim count?
