Businessman Donald Trump surged into the lead for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, with almost twice the support of his closest rival, just as he ignited a new controversy after making disparaging remarks about Sen. John McCains Vietnam War service, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Support for Trump fell sharply on the one night that voters were surveyed following those comments. Telephone interviewing for the poll began Thursday, and most calls were completed before the news about the remarks was widely reported.
Although the sample size for the final day was small, the decline was statistically significant. Still, it is difficult to predict what could happen to Trumps support in the coming days and weeks as the controversy plays out.

The elite press keeps lying. Trump did not “disparage” McCain’s Viet Nam war service.
As a socially conservative Santorum/Cruz/Jindal kind of guy, I’m beginning to wonder if this is going to be another one of those years in which no one is running who represents me and my interests.
Most of these politicians running are lawyers and politicians who have never held a real job nor started a business.
Trump has started his own business and literally reached the top the world in business, success and life. He’s a business man and entrepreneur ,the guys who built this country like Ford, Edison etc. He tells it like it is especially about illegals.
Brit Hume, Kraut and Georgie Will are deeply troubled.
Pray America is waking
And the real questions are:
1. Do we want a man who addresses ALL things like the common man?
2. Do we want a man who addresses ONLY A FEW things politically correctly?

Poll: Trump surges to big lead in GOP presidential race
ROFL!!!
Ouch, that’s got to hurt!
You got that right. Social conservatism is officially kicked out of the Republican Party, and the GOPe brought in Donald Trump to say, “You’re fired!” to social conservatism. The Jeb/Trump wing of the party says, “Abortion and gay marriage are over. You have to accept it for your own good.”
Answer: Donald Trump!
Cruz is supportive of Trump. Stay tuned.
Three days before we can even hope to have a margin of accuracy in any poll, whether his number rises or falls. After that we can hope to see the over all effect. I think, well, I hope, he will hold.
Even with the drop in support on the final night of the survey, Trump was the favorite of 24 percent of registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. That is the highest percentage and biggest lead recorded by any GOP candidate this year in Post-ABC News polls and marks a sixfold increase in his support since late May, shortly before he formally joined the race.
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who announced his candidacy a week ago, is in second place, at 13 percent, followed by former Florida governor Jeb Bush, at 12 percent. Walkers support is strongest among those who describe themselves as very conservative.
The left has sure gotten a lot of mileage out of Trump's off-the-cuff remark about RINO McCain. I wonder what they're going to do for an encore once they wear that one out. Maybe they'll catch him saying ISIS is Muslim or some other such horrendous thing.
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who announced his candidacy a week ago, is in second place, at 13 percent,
Awesome job Scott....keep going. You are doing excellent. In one week, second place already. Nice!
Actually, Trump has a big interview with O’Reilly tonight. Won’t miss it for the world.
McCain himself says he is no hero.
Yeah, let’s nominate Jeb Bush and the illegals will run to vote for him—not.
I agree that Trump did nothing too terribly wrong. We need to take a page from the Rats’ playbook and not worry about the media circus. We just need to get him or Cruz elected. The Rats don’t care about all of Hilly’s scandals, crimes, etc. We really need to stop worrying about what the LSM thinks or says.
