Pastor raises Christian flag over 'Old Glory'

SHELBY, N.C. (BP) – North Carolina pastor Rit Varriale wants to see churches fly the Christian flag above the American flag as a biblical statement, reversing flag etiquette that calls for the American flag to be flown in the prominent position. Varriale, as senior pastor of Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C., said the church installed its first-ever flagpole in order to raise the two flags in a special ceremony after morning worship on Sunday (July 5) in which the Christian flag was raised in the higher position — which prompted interviews by Charlotte-area NBC, CBS and Fox affiliates.

“If you stop and think about it, [flag etiquette] is inconsistent with what the Bible teaches us,” Varriale said. “We are first and foremost Christians who are called to serve the living God.”

I think he has a point - is this the right thing to do? What do other conservative evangelicals think? I'm not really interested in what persons other than those of conservative Christian backgrounds think.

I have no problem with it. God is Lord over all the Earth, even FR.

Hit would be just as easy for him to fly the Christian flag and no other.

So many have died for that Christian flag...oh, wait, where exactly did a “flag” for Christ come from? Is this “biblical” in any form?

My allegiance is to God before country. I have no problems with what he’s doing.

I think it is better to have no flags.

My main memory of the “Christian flag” is when we were little kids we used to make homemade ones on construction paper which we would wave when we were having “Onward Christian Soldier fights,” waving our flags while whacking each other with sticks for fun.

What happens when you go to chapel every day in elementary school.

I'm okay widdit.

I'd also be okay if the several states flew their flags above Old Glory. Or at the same height.

After all, the States created the federal government, not the other way around.

The states delegate power to the federal government.

I like the idea. The rube would be if the Catholic church follows suit. The yellow and white flag is that of the Catholic church and it is also the flag of a sovereign state. According to what I’ve read, no flag should or will fly higher than the US flag. The exception is the flag of the UN. Since the Vatican flag is both a country’s flag and a religious flag, how would that be allowed. Personally, I would have no problem with it flying above the US flag.

Flying anything higher than an American flag is going to offend some people straight off.

I was taught it’s always wrong.

But maybe it could make sense as a protest about the anti-christian direction the country is going in.

The problem is I don’t think that flag is immediately recognizable as “the christian flag”, seems like some people would wonder what it’s for or which country that is

He can do as his congregation wishes. I wonder though, how many would be outraged with a muzzie flag flying above an American flag at any random den of murderous muzzies (mosque)?

Amen and amen! I won’t say the pledge of allegiance to the US flag, but I’ll pledge to the Christian flag.

Does it really matter? I am a Christ Follower first and an American second! For God. For country.

If I remember correctly from my long-ago days in the Coast Guard, the Chaplain’s pennant is the only thing that is SUPPOSED to be flown above the National Ensign. This is only done during actual church services.

Not sure what sort of Christian flag they are talking about, however.

I actually do think it’s the right thing to do.

I don’t think it’s necessary to elaborate why God should be exalted above all things. The Jehovah God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Besides, we see first hand what happens to America when she turns her back on the Most High.

Exactly, the state flags should be flown above the “federal” flag.
