Until Donald Trump sucked the air out of the room with an inflammatory comment about U.S. Sen. John McCain, the highlight of Saturday’s Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, was likely going to be U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.
The GOP presidential contender from Texas drew a rousing standing ovation when he called on the federal government to defund Planned Parenthood.
Cruz was responding to the release of an undercover video earlier this week that captured Planned Parenthoods top doctor talking about how the abortion provider sells the body parts of aborted babies.
A controversy that was swept from the front pages by the deadly attack Thursday on U.S. military personnel in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Cruz drew several standing ovations and, as one attendee noted, he was definitely the “crowd’s cup of tea” — at least until Trump opened his mouth.
American Bridge posted a video of Cruz discussing Planned Parenthood on social media.
Here’s that clip and a sampling of responses to Cruz’s remarks from Twitter:

God bless him!
We have to get behind Cruz. Yes, Trump’s personal attacks are fun, it we finally have a REAL conservative here.
Hilary totally does not inspire the democrats like Obama did— many will stay home.
Many evangelicals that stayed home for Romney will come out to vote. I honestly think he has a good chance of winning.
I watched his speech on CSPAN, very inspirational and the applause was overwhelming.
Personally I’d make Trump Ambassador to the UN. If they thought John Bolton was a big meanie they ain’t seen nuthin yet.
It’s disgraceful that the baby killers at “Planned Parenthood” get one penny of taxpayer dollars. I don’t pay taxes to have them used to murder American babies, America’s future. Somebody should go to jail.
THATS IT! TED CRUZ JUST LOST MY VOTE!
AGAIN!!!
Better to just get out of that den of liberalism and be done with it.
Now to encourage the use of Nuremberg-style trials for pro-murder-by-abortionists on charges of crimes against humanity, genocidal murder, and treason.
Cruz wants to increase HB1 visas. I can't support anyone who is willing to get rid of the jobs of thousands of American workers.
The best thing that could happen for America is a serious relaunch of HUAC. No doubt it would create a massive scream for leftists of every stripe and no small level of Chaos. But we cannot coexist with communism under the Constitution.
Personally I’d rather see the chaos have a point and since we get it either way with leftists doing what they do...
If you pulled a lever for Mitt, you really have no excuse.
I was thinking White House spokesperson, but your idea is much better.
We have to keep Trump in the race until Jebberish and Rubio are destroyed in the polls. Trump is forcing them to take definitive stands against the base, revealing them for the fool GOPe tools that they are. It permits Cruz to take the high road during the course of the election. Trump is invaluable to our efforts for president Cruz.
As some freeper said, I hope Cruz is taking notes on Donald Trump’s style. Not that I want Trump for President, but Trump is throwing nice red meat at his Republican audience.
Norm, now you sound like those innocent, holier than thou, Trumpers...
But, I agree with you. Cruz lost my vote too ;-)
Oh, and I wish I had my money back. Forgot that one.
LOL...then who can you support?
It’d be nice if he went to work on Monday.......and present a bill to do what he is saying.
Also apply RICO to domestic organizations that support or enable islamoterrorists.
