Greece struggles against wildfire front, calls for EU help

Greece appealed for EU assistance Friday to battle wildfires raging on the outskirts of Athens and in the southern Peloponnese region that forced the evacuation of several villages.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said he had requested help to fight the fires and announced army and airforce units were being deployed to help douse the flames.

"All firefighting forces, in addition to the army and the airforce, are on alert," Tsipras told reporters, blaming the outbreak on "emergency weather conditions".

"We all need to stay calm," he said.

Greece had asked for four aircraft from Europe, fire department spokesman Nikos Tsongas told a briefing.

Tsipras, fresh from a bruising vote in parliament early Thursday to approve an unpopular EU-IMF debt deal, was expected to reshuffle his government but such plans have now been pushed back, reports said.

That is the closest I’ve ever seen to a major city.

These are not a few isolated houses in the deep woods.

Gotta give the Prime Minister credit for blaming the fires on “emergency weather conditions” instead of the oh-so-tired “globull warming”.

A good lefty could also find a way to work “racist” into the verbal mix, but as socialist as Greece is, they are not as far gone as our very own home grown lefties and probably never even thought of it.

Preppers’ PING!!

For those who believe that mere financial crash can not quickly reduce a modern country to chaos.

Greece...right next to Turkey, and next to the straits into Black Sea, a transportation pinch point. If Greece really falls, that will be the beginning of real trouble.

The Greek island of Lesbos is being flooded by a rising tide of people seeking to illegally migrate to Europe from the nearby Turkish coast on just about anything that will float.

“The situation is no longer manageable,” said International Organization for Migration worker Zoi Livaditou, who each morning takes stock of new groups of immigrants plucked from the Aegean Sea or arriving on the beach after risky night-time crossings.

“We’re averaging around 200 arrivals each day,” Livaditou said, noting that Lesbos’ capital, Mytilene, counts only 36,000 full-time residents.
