The House approved $8 billion in highway funding Wednesday to keep projects moving past a July 31 deadline and buy enough time to negotiate the long-term bill lawmakers really want.
But the measure is now on a collision course with the Senate, where Republicans sketched out a more ambitious bill that would pump tens of billions of dollars in new funding in coming years.
House GOP leaders said they would eventually like a six-year bill. But for now, they asked members to swallow hard and support a five-month extension through Dec. 18, saying negotiations on the bigger bill could take months.

If Repblicans acted like democrats, they would have used it to defund Planned Parenthood by adding amendments.
Some want to amend the six-year highway bill to re-authorize the Ex-Im Bank.
December 18? Is that so they can use sob stories about government workers unable to celebrate Christmas unless they pass a pork laden behemoth?

And where is this “tens of millions of new funding” going to come from?
Maybe we can borrow it from Iran, they have billions in cash right now.
That’s funny! (not really, though).
Whenever one of these highway bills comes up, it ends up becoming a gigantic pork-filled spending bill.
Prediction: the longer they put off passing the final bill, the more stuff they'll add to it. Bring home the bacon just before the next election.
The 2012 two-year one wasn’t too bad. It didn’t have earmarks, as far as I know.
Tell me how the gas taxes we pay are spent??
Aren’t are all those funds supposed to be earmarked for highway upkeep?
