The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued the following statement Monday regarding the Boy Scouts of America resolution for adult leader standards:
As a chartering organization, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has always had the right to select Scout leaders who adhere to moral and religious principles that are consistent with our doctrines and beliefs. Any resolution adopted by the Boy Scouts of America regarding leadership in Scouting must continue to affirm that right.

As the Mormon Church is the largest charter organization in scouting, this line in the sand should make things interesting.

I’ve been purposely avoiding this story all day but it seems BSA is really in the tank now.

Think about what the Boys Scouts have done today.
An avowed flaming homosexual adult can now take boys on an overnight camping trip that requires sleeping in tents. And the leadership is fine with that. Let that sink in.

It's suffered a 13% drop in membership since this started. With that kind of "success" you'd think they'd get rid of Robert Gates, but...he's the one that steered the removal of the gays in the military, so he's "their" man for this.
Will be really interesting to see how the LDS handles this. My guess is they fold, because they get threatened with loss of tax exempt status, behind the scenes or in open social warfare. M2C.

What exactly are young boys supposed to learn from Scouting now? Moral uprightness? Integrity? Self-reliance? Courage? From a whiny metrosexual poof?
Anyone have any figures on how much membership in Scouting has declined since they went fag?

That’s a compromise of sorts, but it still has a shadow hanging over it. The parent organization is still the dog that can wag the tail if it wants.

steered the removal of the ban on gays serving openly (don't ask don't tell) policy.
To clarify.

The lds church certainly doesn’t need bsa. Watch to see them enroll their boys in a good new or alternate scouting type organization.

If they have enough impetus in their faith to want to be clean living. That is something that, in the end, really needs to be undertaken for the sake of God. Trying to undertake it for any other sake ends up being a losing slippery slope.

If the churches have no say, the should leave BSA behind and start a church-members only scouting group.

Lds are human with human limitations and faults like the rest of us. And we’ve all seen the many criticisms of lds theology here. But you’d have to search around a lot to find another big group with, in general.a stronger commitment to living a moral lifestyle. To give them their due, I think they’re more than a match for a homosexualized bsa. Especially since organizing and running organizations is one of the lds strengths. We will see.

The big question is whether they are trying to live unto God, or unto themselves. They DO have a history.

Scouting has been a solid program for the young men for the LDS church. They run a separate program for the young women. I expect that they will break with the Scouts and run their own organization for the young men if the BSA tries to force gay leadership in an LDS ward. My middle son was part of a local troop sponsored by the local Catholic church. They had a bigger organization with depth in age that I found missing from the troop in my LDS ward. A ward of 500 people simply doesn't generate enough scouts from starting to senior age range. That limits opportunities to learn from older scouts and grow into leadership positions. What passed for a whole troop sponsored by an LDS ward was barely larger than a single patrol in my own scout troops. We usually had a patrol of 10 to 15 and 8 to 10 patrols in the troop.
It was April 1972 when I left my Eagle Board of Review with an approval at age 15. It is disconcerting to see what has happened in the intervening years.

More likely they will become part of Liberal Sin City which has gone beyond challenging morals to redefining them. Might not be as big as the old organization, but inertia riders will continue to enroll.

If you really do want clean living, then it’s going to be next to impossible to maintain that with an association with a mixed BSA.

So much for Scouts being trustworthy when BSA (and I won’t write the words which “B”, “S”, and “A” now represent) claims: “If you like your non-GLBTQ Scoutmaster, you can keep your non-GLBTQ Scoutmaster.”
