Cruz campaign: New York Times is lying about bulk book sales

Ted Cruz's presidential campaign says The New York Times' claim that his book's sales were driven by "strategic bulk purchases" is a lie, and has called on the paper to release its evidence or formally apologize for keeping him off its bestsellers' list.

"Yesterday, news broke that the New York Times had omitted Cruz’s best-selling book 'A Time for Truth' from their best-seller list," Cruz's campaign said Friday, referring to an On Media blog report about the Times' decision to exclude Cruz's new biography from its bestsellers list, despite the fact that the book sold more copies in its first week than all but two of the other bestselling titles.

"The Times is presumably embarrassed by having their obvious partisan bias called out. But their response—alleging ‘strategic bulk purchases’—is a blatant falsehood,” Cruz campaign spokesperson Rick Tyler said in a statement. “The evidence is directly to the contrary. In leveling this false charge, the Times has tried to impugn the integrity of Senator Cruz and of his publisher Harper Collins.”

“We call on the Times, release your so-called ‘evidence.’ Demonstrate that your charge isn’t simply a naked fabrication, designed to cover up your own partisan agenda," Tyler continued. "And, if you cannot do so, then issue a public apology to Senator Cruz and Harper Collins editor Adam Bellow for making false charges against them."

The Cruz campaign's request came just minutes after HarperCollins announced that it had found "no evidence of bulk orders or sales through any retailer or organization" -- a statement that all but accused the Times of lying. The publisher also pointed out that 'A Time For Truth' "ranked high on other publishing industry bestseller lists including Nielsen Bookscan (#4)...The Wall Street Journal (#4) and Barnes and Noble (#7)," all of which "omit bulk orders books from their rankings."

Eileen Murphy, the Times spokesperson, said Friday that the paper was standing by her initial claim that the "overwhelming preponderance of evidence was that sales [of Cruz's book] were limited to strategic bulk purchases." Murphy did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the Cruz campaign's statement.

In her initial response, Murphy said the Times had "uniform standards that we apply to our best seller list, which includes an analysis of book sales that goes beyond simply the number of books sold." She later added, "Our goal is that the list reflect authentic best sellers, so we look at and analyze not just numbers, but patterns of sales for every book."

The Cruz campaign called Murphy's initial explanation "cryptic," and her later claims about bulk purchases "false."

"Their decision to blackball Cruz's book suggests that the Times very much does not want people to read the book," the campaign said. "There were no 'strategic bulk purchases.' Cruz spent last week on a nation-wide book tour, signing copies of his book at multiple locations. Booksellers at each event had long lines—sometimes over 400 people per event."

"A Time For Truth" was published on June 30 and sold 11,854 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen Bookscan's hardcover sale numbers. That's more than 18 of the 20 titles that will appear on the bestseller list for the week ending July 4, including Aziz Ansari's "Modern Romance," which is #2 on the list, and Ann Coulter's "Adios America," which is #11.

How can I tell the NYT that their actions have inspired to now buy multiple copies of the book now, as opposed to waiting awhile?

I am going to buy Cruz’s book BECAUSE of the NYT bullying. I want them to know that.

They had no problem with bulk sales by the Shillary. What difference does it make?

The “Free” press has been lying to the public since JP Morgan bought up all the major newspapers in the early 1900s.....to control the proper “perceptions” of the masses.

Same with all the Foundations-—the Ford, Carnegie, Rockefeller, etc—all to buy off EVERYONE-—even judges so that they “rule” correctly-—so that Westinghouse and Tesla or whoever could be destroyed or controlled.

Power corrupts and the elite Robber Barons were the most corrupt and evil in the history of the World. They had bought up all major information outlets (and public schools) by the 1930s.....and with the help of thier Foundations-—(money laundering systems), they could buy up all the churches and pastors and actually FLIP “good and evil” in the masses since Jimmy Carter created the Department of Education (unconstitutional) and the TV had the green light for pornography and obscenity to corrupt and enslave all the children, particularly the little boys.

The essential need of a Republic is to always promote Virtue (Montesquieu). Without Virtue learned and habituated in children, Freedom is impossible (Aristotle).

Anyone who trusts the NYTimes is a fool. Caught lying about their best sellers, and their news. Not even worth buying to line the bird cages of America.

The Slimes will probably give Cruz more press by their lies than if they had just told the truth.

Ha!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't choose my reading material based on whether the Times has deigned to include it on their so-called best seller list. When did the Times become the determinant of what America should read?

I am no longer supporting Cruz, but find this troubling. My solution, I ordered a copy on Amazon. Why don’t you as well?

You have a valid point.

However, wouldn’t it be sweet if Cruz supporters could stick it to the NYT and show that BECAUSE of their bias, the book is selling even more?

Just a thought.
