What a trio of him, Alec Guinness, and David Lean.
Surprised he would still be living in Cairo after all of his success. RIP.
Just saw Mackenna's Gold a couple of weeks ago. Great Actor.............Thanks for the memories, Sir, Rest In Peace..................
I never heard anything about his politics. I always liked the roles he played and his performances.
One thing that really impressed me years about was a time when he was no longer getting any good roles, so he took out a large ad in a large entertainment periodical as I recall. I believe after that he did get some roles and somewhat back on track.
Let’s also not forget his iconic role as Agent Cedric in the movie “Top Secret”!
I used to read his Bridge column. His skill was mind boggling.

Yes he was LOL. Sometimes when I’m in a lousy mood, I watch Top Secret’ just to get me back on track. I met Val Kilmer years ago and he told us he’d rather do a sequel for Top Secret than Top Gun. And there really was a spec script for it..
In case anyone is curious, he was born in Egypt to a Melkite Catholic family of Lebanese descent.
At one time he was given a death sentence by fatwa because he had kissed a “Jewess”, Barbara Streisand, in “Funny Girl.”
Who can think of Omar Sharif and not think Return of the Pink Panther?
He pissed off a lot of Egyptians for even working with Streisand who was a vocal supporter of Israel (at that time anyway - don’t know where she is now).
What a career, and what a life, that man led. We will miss him.
He was also not to well loved by Muslims for playing the role of the Saint Peter in the TV movie of the same name.
Sad, I had no idea he was a bridge genius. Too often we only find out the full extent of people’s accomplishments after they have gone.
RIP Yuri,
You had a gift.
he was raised Catholic, but converted to islam as an adult.
i’ve never felt the same about him since i learned that. i guess now he sees the error of his ways... a bit too late though.
i just watched him in The Night of the Generals the other day. a very curious movie.
Supposedly he bedded a lot of starlets. He did a movie “Mayerling” about the murder/suicide of the Hapsburg Crown Prince Rudolf. An ok movie but worth watching just to oogle a gorgeous Catherine Deneuve. I wonder if he hit her too. :0
Didn’t know that.
Faten Hamama, his wife of nearly 20 years (55-74), just died in January.
