A father said strategically placed luggage may have helped save his children when a deputy rammed into the family's van, sending himself and two others to the hospital for minor injuries.

At about 2 a.m. Sunday, the Auten family pulled off the West San Marcos Boulevard exit from State Route 78, returning from a trip to Wyoming.

Snip

“We had a couple police vehicles pass us at a high rate of speed and then into the intersection,” said father Floyd Auten. “And I don't know if it was the third or fourth patrol vehicle that hit us, but we didn't have a whole lot of warning. It was pretty quick. I heard the screeching of tires and then the impact happened shortly after that.”

According to investigators, a San Diego County Sheriff’s deputy lost control of his car and slammed into the rear of the family's van.

I'm not sure why responses have turned into such a free-for-all.

A father said strategically placed luggage

Apparently, packing your luggage in the luggage area of the vehicle is "strategic". I wonder if the parents thought, "Hmmm, if some donut crazed jackboot slams into the back of the van, this luggage should protect the children!"?

That’s it, pull over when you hear a siren so LE can hit you at high speed. You are now at 0 mph and they are at 70+ ...

I’m not sure what you are saying. They were stopped at a red light.

Initial reports were that they were responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call.

I’ve read nohing else on that subject.

“I’m not sure what you are saying. They were stopped at a red light.”

How odd. The other cops navigated past the van no problem. This one slammed into it. I wonder if the cop was drinking.

“At night, many drivers tend to fixate. Drinking drivers may fixate on a car's tail lights. Occasionally, drunks run into stopped vehicles because they have fixated on the lights and drove straight in to them (commonly called the “moth to the flame” syndrome).”
