DENVER Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry may not agree with Colorados decision to legalize recreational marijuana, but he said Saturday he will defend the states right to make a hash of things.
Speaking at the Western Conservative Summit, Mr. Perry made a vigorous defense for the states role as laboratories of democracy, in the words of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, even if it means sticking up for Colorados retail pot market.
Let this country compete again. I am so optimistic about the future of America if we would free up these states from this one-size-fits-all, Mr. Perry said. Youll see innovation. And from time to time, a states going to foul it up. They just are.

War on Drugs Nanny State PING!
I may cut Governor Spectacles some slack. He just might understand Federalism.

Rick just doesn’t seem to be catching on. He ought to go back to Haskell for some meditation and reflection and plenty of heat this time of the year.
Rick Perry has spent more time and, judging from the number of ads in the media, money in Iowa than any other candidate. He's got almost nothing to show for it. The only person supporting him that I know who is not getting paid is radio host Sam Clovis.
He ought to run for his old job on the TX State Board of Education if he wants to be on the ballot.
Sorry, I know a lot of people here don’t care for Gov. Perry, but what exactly is wrong with his statement?
I’m not a fan of marijuana or the pro legalization movement, but stating that an individual state has the right to set their own policy, and the right to be wrong ... that’s constitutionally correct.
Ignore of course that SCOTUS eviscerated the 10th am last week with both major rulings... Rick is right on this one.
Thanks for the ping!
Perry got this 100% right. This does not have a damn thing to do with Federal Law. It is up to each and individual state to make their own laws so far as it does not violate federal law.
The real problem is where Federal Law as ascribed by the Federal Courts usurps State Law in direct violation of the Constitution. When this happens there is no law.
I was going to say the exact same thing.
I'm not an MJ user or fan, either.
Jesus Christ: You cant impeach Him and He aint gonna resign.
Au Contraire - the 10th Amendment means something and if SCOTUS wasn't a Leftists tool, it would have stopped the homosexual "marriage" deal.
The State are supposed to have more say over their own jurisdiction. Why institute one-size-fits-all policy in a country with the varied geography, geology, weather/climate, and demographics we have? They seldom work anywhere, and where they do, not well.
If Colorado wants to be the "Rocky Mountain High" state, it will attract people who want that. Pity they didn't do that in a place with less fascinating geology and geography, but, them's the breaks.
