The Stonewall Inn, the Greenwich Village bar where resistance to a police raid sparked the modern gay rights movement, was made a city landmark Tuesday, the first time a site has been named primarily because of its significance to the LGBT history.
"New York City's greatness lies in its inclusivity and diversity," Meenakshi Srinivasan, chairwoman of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, said before the unanimous vote. "The events at Stonewall were a turning point in the LGBT rights movement and in the history of our nation."
Patrons fought back against a police raid on the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969, and the street protests that followed for several days are credited with galvanizing gay activism in New York and globally. The rebellion is commemorated with annual gay pride parades in hundreds of cities.
"Few sites anywhere in New York have the international resonance of Stonewall," said Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.
The vote came after a public hearing in which every speaker supported the landmark designation.
"There are few locations that can be cited as the birthplace of a global movement. One such location is the Stonewall Inn," said Corey Johnson, the City Council member whose district includes the Stonewall.

A 1960’s mafia run gay pick up joint used for drug distribution and prostitution gets Federal landmark status.
How low can we go?
A monument, to taking it right up the wazzoo.
Stonewall? As in Stonewall Jackson?
My thoughts exactly.
It would take divine action at this point to get through to the promoters of depravity. They are so far gone now, they actually take pride in their rebellion against all that is holy.
People are confusing God’s patience for a license to sin. It’s exactly as you say. Someday we will all stand before Him. I hate the concept of anyone being separated for eternity from God, but unrepentant homosexuals (and sinners of all sorts) are freely choosing Hell.
They scoff now, but what’s coming is coming for sure. We can see it falling into place rapidly now, and America is going to reap a full measure for what it is currently sowing. To think we used to be a beacon of freedom and morality to the world. Now we’re promoting the worst sins.
Yeah, all sin makes one fall short of God, but homosexuality is a rebellion not only against God but against the natural use of one’s own body.
We're finding that out day by day.
Oh, you're gonna be amazed.
My gosh. The same time the Confederate flag is being banned and even removed in historic battlefield gift-shops, and anything remotely Confederate is being systematically erased across the board... a homo sex hangout run by the Mob is being glorified. Sick beyond belief.
If this isn’t indicative of what a deviant cesspit of a nation this has become, I don’t know what is.
It took THIS long?
Some icons are coming down, others are going up.
It isn’t a random decay.
It is moves in a spiritual battle.
And even yet, there is overarching purpose as well as the immediate manifest clash of meanings.
To me, this doesn’t tell me anything new or shocking. Things are playing out according to the plans of God. If people allow, it could even have a beneficial effect. You don’t really appreciate water till the well has run dry.
I’m wondering when Chris Murphy will demand Wal-Mart to sell RAINBOW Flags
If you didn't dig the well, no.
And no one’s offended by the name?
