South Carolina governor says Charleston massacre gunman should 'absolutely' be put to death...

Two days after the shooting deaths of nine people during a Bible study at a Charleston church, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said the gunman 'absolutely' should be put to death.

However, the state, though largely pro-death penalty, cannot secure one of the drugs needed for lethal injections and has not executed an inmate since 2011.

Any potential execution order for Dylann Storm Roof, 21, would be years away. He is charged with nine counts of murder in Wednesday's killing spree at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

He appeared briefly before a judge on Friday and his next court appearance is not until October.

The Republican governor made her comments on Friday during NBC's 'Today' show, but Haley has no power in Roof's prosecution or sentencing.

South Carolina's supply of pentobarbital, one of three drugs in the state's lethal injection, expired in 2013.

Corrections Director Bryan Stirling has made it clear to legislators that his agency cannot buy any more, even as 44 people are on death row in the state.

All attempts to purchase more have failed -- a problem in states nationwide.

Some are trying to find new drugs and new sources for drugs because pharmaceutical companies have stopped selling them for executions and pharmacists are reluctant to expose themselves to possible harassment.

Couldn’t he be hurting the case by saying this? The defense could use this to change venues?

Firing squad — quick, some would say instant, and no one has ever survived a firing squad execution in the US, afaik.

Apparently, he tried to kill himself when he had stopped firing but was out of ammo. The death penalty would be no penalty.

.308 rounds are not particularly expensive, and 7.62x54 cost even less - 22LR HP are cheaper still.

Death penalty today = lawyers and judges uses countless excuses to sap the taxpayer for the next 20-30 years. Someone who murders 9 people is less than a dog, yet how long do they take to kill a dog if it attacks people? The same freakin’ day. This is a case with a witness, I believe he also admitted it. Case closed, open and shut case. As soon as he’s convicted give him a bag of marshmallows and a stick to cook them in hell and hang the bastard the same day

I don’t think this little vermin will last long in prison anyway. Too many brothers in there and I think some might take it upon themselves to take care of this white killer. He might even off himself, since that was his original, cowardly, intention. Having said this, the Christian in me would like for him to repent to the Lord. This doesn’t mean he should escape judgment for what he has done, because he won’t.

They can presumably still get rope in South Carolina.

Interesting. I think it's actually better that he's demonstrated to be bat**** crazy (the only possible defense) before he's sentenced to death. Unfortunately, I think they will take forever to execute him. South Carolina had 85 or so inmates on death row when I checked.

Death row inmates are generally segregated from the rest of the prison population. The Aryan Brotherhood, Crips and Bloods will never meet him. He will almost certainly meet his end at the hands of the State of South Carolina, unfortunately far too many years from now.

Public figures should refrain from such statements until after the trial.

Hanging is effective and cost efficient.

That's my thought. The kid would be a definite candidate for the death penalty but won't this give fuel to the defense as bias against it's client?

I think so as well, but she is wise to get the info out there, because you just know that the BlacKKK will be descending on SC as it is.

What happens if he’s found to be truly insane?A lot of States have laws specifically banning the execution of an insane convict.
