Sanders pushes to give Americans a paid vacation

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) wants to give Americans a paid vacation, as part a "family values" agenda he outlined Thursday.

Sanders, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, said he is introducing a bill, the Guaranteed Paid Vacation Act, that would give 10 days of paid vacation to every employee that had worked for an employer for at least one year. The legislation would apply to employers with at least 15 employees.

"What family values are about is that at least for two weeks a year, people can come together under a relaxed environment and enjoy the family," Sanders said from the Senate floor. "That is a family value that I want to see happen in this country."

The legislation is part of the senator's "family values agenda." As part of the agenda, he also backed legislation that would give an employee 12 weeks of paid leave if they have a child or serious medical condition, as well as a separate bill that would give workers up to seven paid sick days.

On his support for paid sick leave, Sanders added, "I am not crazy about the idea of somebody who is sick coming to to work, preparing the food that I eat in a restaurant."

While Republicans had talked previously discussed "family values," Sanders said that "generally speaking, what they mean by family values is opposition to a woman's right to choose, opposition to contraception, opposition to gay rights."

The senator's remarks came as Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who is making a presidential bid, unveiled a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Sanders is Vermont's village idiot. Unfortunately, in order to rid the village of a old geezer suffering from dementia they sent him to Washington.

Like all communists, Bernie's brain is severely damaged, but his vocal cords remain intact. He won't shut up.

He is, though, very much like a watermelon: green on the outside, red on the inside. This man needs to be admitted to an institution for the insane.

Hell, why stop there? I want six weeks of vacation at full pay, plus I want my company to pay for my hotel and travel. Those greedy rich bastards can afford it!!! When Bernie becomes president, we’ll all be able to relax, kick back, live the good life and have “the rich” pay for it all!!!

The only thing I would want to do on a vacation is play with my new pony.

Therefore Sander’s proposal must also include a free pony for all American citizens and any undocumented-dreamer-Americans-in-waiting.

A pony is a constitutional right!

Where does he get the idea that a decision like this should belong to the gov’t. & not a person’s employer?

He’s going to pay for it out of his own pocket?

Business will let employees go on their 363rd day. It’ll be Obamacare in the workplace again. He’s just another grandstander.

We should all be rooting for Bernie. He is pulling Hillary further to the left. Look at the recent Dem Iowa straw poll..he got 41%...she’s petrified of losing Iowa, again, and will go hard left...which will hurt her in the campaign..

Every company I have ever worked for offered paid vacation time. Usually its 5 days after a year, 10 days after 2 years, and so forth up to 4 weeks paid vacation time. At my last factory job I had 4 weeks of paid vacation time and 10 days of unpaid personal time available after 5 years.

That’s a better deal than Slanders is offering by a long shot.

I guess the stupid bastard wants to give EVERYONE a “paid” vacation whether they have a job or not, huh?

Had the government mandated more vacation for my employees than I wanted to give, I would have complied - and cut their pay proportionately. An employer who raises labor costs by 5% to give employees one day off for every 20 days worked may lose the entire profit generated by that business. The only option is cuts to offset that added cost. Sanders is an economic moron who does not understand where wealth comes from.

I’m wondering if this vacation thing is some new liberal hot topic.

My son works at a recently IPO’d tech company. Soon after going public, they announced unlimited vacation for all employees. Seems that’s a popular “perk” at some of these tech places.

Then last week, they announced after an employee is at the company for 5 years, he gets a 30 day sabbatical, not only paid, but with an additional $5,000 bonus.

When I asked my son (who will be coming up to his 5 year mark in another year) why a place with unlimited vacation days would think this was a good idea, he said because the 30 day one will be mandatory.

So people, in their 5th year at the place, will be forced to take those 30 days in one big chunk whether they want to or not.

Seems a tad excessive, no? Not just vacations, but FORCED vacations of an extended period.

If Bernie wants the votes of the Peggy Josephs of the world, he will have to up his game a little and kick in mortgage and gas payments too.
