Edward Snowden: The World Says No to Surveillance
New York Times ^ | June 4, 2015 | Edward J. Snowden

Posted on 06/05/2015 4:53:45 PM PDT by Swordmaker

MOSCOW — TWO years ago today, three journalists and I worked nervously in a Hong Kong hotel room, waiting to see how the world would react to the revelation that the National Security Agency had been making records of nearly every phone call in the United States. In the days that followed, those journalists and others published documents revealing that democratic governments had been monitoring the private activities of ordinary citizens who had done nothing wrong.

Within days, the United States government responded by bringing charges against me under World War I-era espionage laws. The journalists were advised by lawyers that they risked arrest or subpoena if they returned to the United States. Politicians raced to condemn our efforts as un-American, even treasonous.

Privately, there were moments when I worried that we might have put our privileged lives at risk for nothing — that the public would react with indifference, or practiced cynicism, to the revelations.

Never have I been so grateful to have been so wrong.

From the article:

Basic technical safeguards such as encryption — once considered esoteric and unnecessary — are now enabled by default in the products of pioneering companies like Apple, ensuring that even if your phone is stolen, your private life remains private.

I doubt that the NSA has stopped doing any of the things they said they stopped doing.

No, the world just wants less effective US intelligence agencies while empowering their own. Snowden’s continual betrayals only serve to help despotic countries, such as China and Russia, overcome competitive advantages of US intelligence agencies. The only privacy he truly wants is from prosecution.

Right, because he broke the law. He didn't just whistleblow monitoring of Americans, he gave away huge amounts of information about spying on foreigners and foreign governments. So pat on the back for the whistleblowing, and come on home and face the charges for the rest.

I don’t understand why he is so spineless. A righteous man would have got a lawyer and turned himself in.

“Snowden’s continual betrayals only serve to help despotic countries, such as China and Russia”

And of course pointing out our government’s betrayal of the Constitution...

the National Security Agency had been making records of nearly every phone call in the United States.

Am I confused, or is that, intentionally perhaps, misleading?

Does it imply they have been recording calls, when they have actually been recording, supposedly, only the metadata of what numbers have been in contact and for how long? Billing records.

We can have a discussion of whether they should be recording metadata, but that's a different discussion to whether calls themselves should be recorded.

We know the NSA lied in their testimoney before Congress. That was in response to specific questions. Many questions were not asked.

Consider these ...

Well, he's not Hillary Clinton, Lois Lerner, John Koskinen, Jon Corzine, Charlie Rangel, Al Sharpton or Bill Clinton, so I don't see where he's got a lot of options...

I don’t understand why he is so spineless. A righteous man would have got a lawyer and turned himself in.

A REALLY SMART righteous man would have pulled a Bruce Jenner, and sex-changed himself into Hillary Clinton, and thus become unprosecutable.

Lois Lerner would be another good, unprosecutable option...

Sorry, but not one of those links provides much in the way of evidence that NSA or other agencies are recording all, most or even any phone calls between US citizens.

I’m perfectly willing to believe that they are, but the fact that the programs are secret means evidence is sparse. But lack of evidence is not evidence.

I agree there is not much evidence. There is some evidence.

You do have a whistleblower who says 80% of calls are recorded.
They are recording all calls in two countries.
You do have sources that say they have the capacity to record all US calls.
You do know they lied to Congress about the extent of their collections.

Why would you believe they are not collecting it all?

Best.
