Pigs are smarter than dogs.
I love bacon.
i.e. I consider this purely cultural. I won’t make them stop eating dogs and I trust that the Muslims and orthodox Jews won’t make me stop eating pork.

But many people in China and around the world want this festival banned. Well you just knock yourselves out.

It’s only food. The problem arises when people start giving food pet names.

If someone wants to eat dog, I fully support their ability to do so.

I don't believe dogs are just another animal.
They helped Homo Sapiens beat neanderthals. No other animal has developed such a relationship with humans.

If folks want to humanely farm Fido and in like manner process him for food, that’s one thing.
But much of China is not to the point of caring about that. Some in fact think that it gives some kind of power charm to the food by purposely mistreating the dog.
There is also a similar situation going on there for cat.

...dog meat figures prominently in Chinese traditional cuisine. It is supposedly an aphrodisiac and some claim its medicinal valueOh, the stupid!...it hurts!
I have, to my misfortune, eaten dog (and cat and rat and a few other things that I'd rather not think about), but the only thing I ever had served me that had this claim was a cobra heart.
I did not do a Andrew Zimmern reaction.
In fact, I almost puked on it.
The smell was horrifying.
Putrid reptile, indeed!
All meat has a particular smell, cat is, to me kind of a metallic smell, dog is also, but is more coppery, and rat is almost a good smell, not like pork, but a desirable smell.
Much of our sense of taste depends on smell and once you get past the culture shock and look at it as just another piece of protein, it is easily consumed.
But I'm not going to be chowing down on Fido any time soon.
If I were starving, I might even consider human, but I've heard it's nasty.

In my survival class a long time ago, I ate an uncooked rat. I was starving and could care less that it was a rat. I have eaten horse meat, and it was really good. If I had to I would have no problem eating a cat or a dog. If a dog was starving it would have no problem eating a human. All living things are food whether we like it or not.

I don’t believe dogs are just another animal.
I don’t either. But some people feel that way about pigs. Which I eat.
I won’t force my sensibilities on them regarding what they can and can’t eat and I don’t want them doing it to me. Good thing we don’t have Hindus telling us what we can and can’t eat.

Turnabout is fair play - maybe Purina should market “Chinese Food”. I’m not talking about Egg Foo Young, either.
