WASHINGTON In a remarkable reversal of national security policy formed after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Senate voted on Tuesday to curtail the federal governments sweeping surveillance of American phone records, sending the legislation to President Obamas desk for his signature.
The passage of the measure, achieved after a vigorous debate on the Senate floor, will lead to the reinstatement of government surveillance efforts that were blacked out on Monday after Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, blocked their extension.
The vote was a rebuke to Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, as lawmakers beat back a series of amendments that he sought that would have rolled back proposed controls on government spying.

This is all a set-up.
Obama and the NSA will ignore this measure much the same way the FBI isn’t bothering to look for authority to conduct their secret monitoring of cell phone activity over much of America.
As I understand the new bill, they still get to collect everything, but they can only keep it for 18 months.
If they can’t make a connection in 18 months, then they can’t make connections at all.
“As I understand the new bill, they still get to collect everything, but they can only keep it for 18 months.”
I don’t trust them. yes, I’m sure Big Brother will ‘self-monitor’ and delete all records. What Big Government agency will make sure they thoroughly delete everything?
I wonder if this vote has anything to do with threats to airlines as recently as today and many web sites have been difficult to access today.....just a thought.
They aren’t going to get rid of squat after 18 months. There is probably some weaselly words in there about data not being “readily accessible”; near line vs. offline, etc..etc..
It will be no different than a cop that carries a buddy pad. He runs into a suspect for a third time overf say maybe four or five years but can’t quite place him. He thumbs through his buddy pad and see’s he gave the suspect a couple passes, but not this time; now he throws any number of charges against the suspect.
It will be the same thing. Only your date won’t be near line; it will take them just a wee bit longer to mount the dataset from 18+ months ago, but they will have it.
There are players advising our Government who are not American, but hold the keys
because they are being allowed. This means co-conspirators in Treason.
You’re watching a scripted play. Nobody gives up power freely and if you don’t think the intelligence services know all about our elected officials, you’re foolish.
I honestly think I read that who deletes is not part of the bill. This is memory, so we need to check it out more

Elected officials don’t need to be blackmailed. They are little more than highly paid prostitutes at this point. They happily accommodate the intel community when their big donors want them to.
LOL! So the patriot act II is somehow an expansion of freedom? Orwell was a piker compared the nyslimes when it comes to double speak.
In other breaking news, the chocolate ration was increased today to 25 grams.
Boy, and here I was under the impression that is was specifically FORBID.
