Cruz captures conservative Jewish hearts at NY gala, including Adelson’s

“He sounds like a Jew,” someone muttered at a nearby table as Ted Cruz gave his address.

Last night, presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz and Chris Christie addressed over a thousand Jewish New Yorkers of Jewish Values International Awards Gala... Despite the long cast of characters present (Senator Bob Menendez, Christie, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, magnate Sheldon Adelson.... it was Cruz who stole the show, by far.....

When Cruz got on stage, for a moment the room shifted into a political rally more than a charity dinner: Cruz walked around the podium, without notes, and gave an impassioned address which listed his successes in office and proven commitment to Israel.

“Let us think about tomorrow. In nineteen months, there will be a new president of the United States.”

Applause, screams and cheers. Thank Gods were heard throughout the front tables.

“Instead of a president who boycotts Prime Minister Netanyahu, imagine America standing unapologetically with the nation of Israel.”

Cruz promised that, as president, he would move the embassy to Jerusalem: “We need a leader who will act, and who will respect eternal capital of Israel.”

At the next table, a woman wiped away a tear. Cruz knows his audience: He speaks their language. He addresses the fears of American Jewry, and has clearly read American Jewish newspapers closely to understand the burning debates of Jews on this side of the Atlantic.

In his address, Cruz singled out Sheldon and Miriam Adelson as “fearless warriors standing for the United States and for the nation of Israel” - who many suspect will be his backers this election season. Reporter Jacob Kornbluh noted, and wondered aloud on Twitter, that Adelson gave Cruz a standing ovation but sat still when Christie finished speaking: an indication perhaps fitting with Miriam’s professed fondness for Cruz...

Ted Cruz has Mercer, if he scores Sheldon Adelson, Rand Paul and the establishment can run all the snark ads they want-- Cruz will over match them.

So Cruz is not immune to political pandering. Guess it goes with being a candidate. Something unseemly about all of them trapping to Adelson’s feet looking for money.

So happens Cruz actually believe in a Jew-loving Christian theology. So sue him if you don’t like it.

In the meantime, God is grinning.

“US Sen. Ted Cruz with Cuban Jewish family roots, will receive the ‘Defender of Israel Award’ from Israeli Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and Elie Wiesel.”

No pandering, my friend, he was there to receive an award for his principled and long standing convictions.

Cruz is also for increasing H1B’s and a proponent of legal immigration— for which positions he’s taking some flak. Now, if he were a typical politician, he would flip-flop and pander by coming off those positions. But he’s not, and he won’t.

Not pandering with Cruz. He means it. His support for Israel goes way back.

It's more serious than political "pandering". Adelson is very much into political ownership.

If elected, Adelson will be Cruz's Soros.

Sorry- I’m not a registered Haaretz user- the article was generally available, now it’s not. There is an anti-Israel website that has reprinted the article. I don’t wish to post the link, but if you’re interested, just send a private mail and I’ll provide the link.

CRUZ has SUBSTANCE and INTEGRITY.

That alone should TOWER above most candidates seeking the nomination.

Yes...it would be a game changer if Cruz can woo Adelson’s support.

Go Ted!

Just curious what the writer had to say about Krispie’s reception/speech. Thanks.

I think Christie was there because the sponsor was Shmuley Boteach, who has run for Congress in New Jersey. Christie was the keynote speaker at last year’s event.

You couldn’t be further from the truth. Ted Cruz is a man of integrity and a committed constitutional conservative. He’ll be no man’s puppet and will actually work to restore the American Republic.

The substance of the article is pretty well summarized in the thread. Few sentences about Gingrich, Mendenez, and other non-political attendees. As for Christie:

“Christie gave a rather uninspiring address dotted with words like “hope,” “love,” and “understanding.” He criticized Obama, saying that he made it seem that “America was the reason for violence in the world.” “Strength must come first,” he said, “before hope.”

The guy is impressive. Folks we have to get rid of Bush...that leaves the door open for a conservative. We can argue later but lets keep our target in order.

Sheldon Adelson owns Ted Cruz:

On immigration: “I’m pro-Dream Act, I’m pro the Dream Act. My parents were immigrants to this country,” he said. “What are we going to do? Listen, I’m sure a lot of my parents’ generation …..snuck into the ship and they came into the country.

“So – people will do anything to leave massacres and to leave the economic conditions – they can’t put food on their own table.

“There has been in our history a lot of illegal immigration. Do I approve of it? No, but it’s here.

“It would be inhumane to send those people back , to send 12 million people out of this country to disrupt a whole potpourri of family issues” over what happens to the children.

“I mean it’s all ridiculous. So we’ve got to find a way, find a route for those people to get legal citizenship,” he said.
