If Bevin win holds, Conway beware
WDRB ^ | May 20, 2015 | John David Dyche

It appears that 17.3 percent of Kentucky's registered Republicans have by 83 votes nominated Matt Bevin to be the party's candidate for governor. We will not know this for certain, however, until the recanvass requested by apparent runner-up James Comer is completed, and perhaps after that if there is an actual recount.

Democrats nominated Jack Conway. His opponent, a complete unknown who did not mount a serious campaign, nonetheless got more than one out of every five votes cast.

Conway supposedly wanted Bevin to win. He got his wish and will soon regret it if Bevin's well-run primary campaign and impressive election night victory speech are any indication.

Bevin was widely reported to be the best speaker on the GOP campaign circuit, did well in every debate and panel, and ran good television ads. As for his celebratory address, commentator Al Cross said it best on Kentucky Educational Television.

"That was a heck of victory speech and a marvelous way to introduce himself to Kentuckians. Conway has his hands full."

Conway, the Al Gore of Kentucky politics, will try to portray every Bevin idea as a risky scheme. But Bevin can make the campaign one about sensible conservative change versus the stagnant Democratic status quo.

It will be hard for Democrats and their allies in the state's large liberal newspapers to demonize Bevin the way they usually do. Bevin's running mate, African-American female military veteran and businesswoman Jenean Hampton dazzled in her statewide debut and the beautifully diverse Bevin kids provide an incomparable example of family values.

Excellent news. Governorships are going to be more important than the Presidency going forward. All the action is going to be at the state level.

Governorships are very important. The Presidency is extremely important. Governors don’t appoint the Black robbed federal judges who can rule us by fiat, the President does.

Janean Hampton is going to make an awesome Lt. Gov and I’d like to see her in the governor’s seat in eight years. Walker’s got a great LG in Wisconsin who hopefully will take over for him once he’s elected POTUS.

Do you have a link to Bevin’s victory speech? The one that’s being so heavily praised.

I sure hope he wins - sounds like he will be a great governor for Kentucky. I wasn’t aware that they had a DEMONcrat governor.,

KY Republicans have won the governorship only twice since 1943.

Interesting. Is it because of the unions that are so prevalent among the coal miners? I watched a documentary some time ago, called “Harlan County.” These people live and breathe the union - or they did.

Also puts him in an excellent spot to run for Senate at some point, if he chooses to.

Most of Kentucky state government is democrat. The state votes (R) at national level most of the time but (D) at state level.

The democrats have ran KY for 60 yrs. and held it back to the point it cannot compete with other southern states for big business because of their insistence of pushing unions on everyone. Kentucky’s tax code is an abomination, sales tax, income tax, property tax even on automobiles year after year, a tax on everything, Illinois of the south.

The last Republican gov. Fletcher was a walking disaster. Had a surplus and instead of banking a chunk of it, paying down debt or the novel idea, give it back to the taxpayers, he spent it. Then every time he came out with anything that ruffled the democrats and state media’s feathers he would back down like a whipped dog and go hide.

Glad to see that Bevin has seemingly learned from all of his missteps last year running for US Senate, has his act together and is running a focused and disciplined campaign.

Thanks, I never understood that Fletcher was like Pence in IN in being one to cave so quickly. Now, it makes sense.
