Gas price fallout: People trading in hybrids for SUVs
WFMZ ^

Posted on 04/21/2015 6:21:55 PM PDT by Red in Blue PA

With gas prices low, more people are trading in their hybrid and electric cars for purely gasoline-powered vehicles, including SUVs.

So far this year, only 45 percent of people that traded in an environmentally-friendly hybrid car purchased another, according statisticians at Edmunds.com. In 2012, that figure was over 60 percent and this is the first time it has ever fallen below 50 percent.

If gas prices haven’t rebounded significantly by next year, I’ll be very surprised.

Growth is near zero....in fact we could be nearing another “official” recession. Why will gas prices rise if demand is lower for goods and services?

For the same reason gas prices approached $4.50/gal where I live during the last recession.

Scratch "last recession" .. we're still in one! It's been seven years long and still going on!

Over the last four years, I wouldn’t exactly say the economy was rip roaring. None the less gas prices continued to climb.

I suspect we’ll get relief for a while and then prices will go back up again.

You’re premise may be proven right. I’d be happy to be wrong.

What fools. When prices go up again they’ll scramble to get another more fuel efficient car.

People in America want cars about the size they used to be in the nineteen fifties, sixties, and seventies. Government by environmentalist control freaks are who want these little pieces of crap on the market today. They are the ones demanding them. The market for SUV’s is huge because those BIG vehicles are more comfortable, provide the illusion of more safety, often are more safe, and carry a lot of personal stuff.

Claustrophobia is not a preferred brand of automobile.

I don’t think the rebates/tax credits are as good as they used to be. A lot of newer cars have 6 speed (or more) transmissions, so you can get pretty good highway mileage.

You gotta wonder about those trade in hybrids. What idiot would buy a car that’s going to need $10k worth of new batteries in no time? Even libs can’t be that dumb.

Plus, if you have to drive around the Pennsylvania Poconos like I do, 4 wheel drive comes in handy during the winter.

Life is good at 2 bucks a gallon.
And a lot of the bigger stuff gets a lot better fuel economy than it used to.
They got pickups with mid 20s highway mpg.

“...provide the illusion of more safety...”

Why would a larger car necessarily not provide a wider margin of safety vs a smaller vehicle? In a collision it would seem the larger car would provide more protection.

Mission, Dumb Down, accomplished.

Desensitize as many as possible, including here, that 2.00 fuel is “low cost”, when minus government paychecks and the tax gatherers stock market, it should be .37 cents per gallon.

Further, desensitize as many as possible, including here, that taking out a loan or leasing is “buying” a vehicle, when it is nothing but servant renting.

Commie no ownership PERMIT-ed, mission Dumb Down, accomplished.

I said immediately following that of mine of which you quoted “...often are more safe...”, and the reason I said that is because of numerous occasions reading Consumer Reports on the various vehicles sold in this country. Size matters, but know what you are buying. Not all the BIG vehicles are safer than some smaller ones.

Example: A number of years ago my wife was driving to work in the morning. An eighteen wheeler with a 53 ft trailer pulled out in front of her attempting to cut across six lanes trying to avoid having to drive a mile or two to find a place to turn around, and come back on the other side of the street, which was his destination. He, and his rig ran over her SAAB 9000 SL. $5000.00 dollars damage to the car, which was repaired, and served us for many years after that. My wife was shaken, but unharmed. I picked her up at the site of the accident, and took her on to her job per her request. The SAAB was one ‘H’ of a car. My point being some vehicles are built, while some are put together.

As I said some larger vehicles provide the illusion of safety, and some often are.

I think the point is though that people don’t want the little cars our government full of lefties is regulating down in size. The majority of the citizenry of this country want the comfort, and the ability to carry whatever they want, when they want, and have the room to breathe.

I can’t believe the size of cars that people drove back then. They must have been better drivers. And in comparison, in spite of some illusion of safety, they were absolute death traps compared to even the tiniest, cheapest US car of today.

Nothing pisses me off worse than seeing a 5 foot tall, 100 pound woman driving around alone in an Infiniti QX56 - with a faded 2012 Obama sticker on the back bumper. We’ve got ‘em here.

Just do what I do. Buy a new one ton truck, and charge it out at 27 bucks an hour, not only does it pay for itself, there’s quite a bit left over at the end of the month. Also collect your hourly rate and maintain your equipment.
