That's true but unfortunately the demographics of the US have changed drastically since Reagan's time, and we know in whose favor. Call me a pessimist but that's reality.
Another reality is that morality and human nature transcend demographics.
Most folks in the "dependent class" and in those "demographics" that indicate welfare leeches and entitlement-minded dependents, would never bother to vote if they weren't cajoled. Democrat and leftist votes are ginned, harvested, manufactured and manipulated to elect leftists that would lose otherwise.
The leftists who actually vote are a minority. It's why the left has to cheat, whether it's in the Republican party (remember Mississippi and Thad Cochran) or whether it's the Democrat party. The left dominates the media, education, and government work forces, but it is the minority everywhere else. Productive folks who enjoy freedom, work for a living, people who care enough to trouble to register to vote and then make it to the polls on election day, are intelligent enough to vote for LESS government. When they are denied that option in the candidates ... they become apathetic and blow off election day. The MAJORITY, demographics notwithstanding, would love to be able to vote for LESS government.
Demographics are pretense. Morality is destiny. Americans are on balance sensible, productive moral people who want to divest themselves of repressive amoral government tyranny in everything from forced accommodation of open homosexuality and on-demand abortion, to energy and food production and consumption (the environmentalist agenda) to their own health care (Obamacare).
Reagan's promise was timeless, and so is Cruz's.
What you want to go for is mostly what conservatism is all about, but the soft sell idea is a proven loser as the RINO’s of the past just sat there, soft selling.
We need push back, someone who will call the rats on their lies, misdeads and just plain outright propaganda.
It just feels good to have someone stand up for America instead of cower, hide and want to get along when the left defines getting along as totally caving in to principals. (did I just describe Boner and all the RINOS?)
Another soft seller RINO was Bush, and his compassionate conservatism, when defined was nothing more than democrat-lite on steroids.
Pleeeeeeeeze, no more soft sellers.
And everybody has Conservatism in them, we just needed somebody to articulate it
in such a way for those people to understand it, and to relate. Cruz is doing it.
Here is what I have posted on a couple of other threads in respect of Conservatives vs LIEberals (I callem LIEberals because they LIE!):

The reason I never heard him speak is because I am a Walker supporter. However, for some reason tonight something told me to give Cruz a chance and listen to him. I must admit I liked what I heard. I never doubted that he was a conservative that is for sure. I look forward to hearing more from him not only in writing but video.

The Main Stream Media: “Male Chauvinist Ted Cruz attacked the first lady today in a brutal show of male aggression which is a trait that is rampant among conservatives these days. His brutal attack on her character only goes to show why the GOP has become the mean-spirited party they are today. Ted also thinks God speaks directly to him, and he of course is a climate denier and an extremist bible thumper. Can this country afford 4 or more years of such ignorance, backwards ideology and Neanderthal thinking that is so prominently displayed in the republican party? We think not!”
