Environment - Not Farmers Using 80% of California's Water ?
Does the California Citrus Mutual have a point?
In a Press Release - they also claim "The only sector that has been "exempt" from water reductions is, in fact, the largest user of water - the environment. "
" For a second consecutive year farmers in the Central Valley will receive a zero percent allocation of surface water from the Central Valley Project. Citrus growers in the Friant Service Area are among the most severely impacted. "
"As growers grapple with another year of no water, more and more acreage continues to be taken out of production."
"There is no denying that California is the midst of a water crisis," says California Citrus Mutual President Joel Nelsen. "For a fourth consecutive year Mother Nature has failed to provide the rain and snow desperately needed to replenish our nearly depleted reservoirs."
"This is not the first time California has experienced a drought and it certainly will not be the last. But until recent history, we have had the infrastructure and water policy necessary to navigate successfully through the inevitable dry years. Today, we do not have a system in place that is capable of meeting the State's growing demand."
"No sector has been asked, or forced, to take a cut as large as agriculture has. Citrus growers are receiving zero surface water this year. Trees, some decades-old, are being bulldozed. How much more of a cut can we take?" It is a widely sensationalized myth that agriculture uses 80% of California's water. According to information from the California Department of Water Resources, it is the environment that actually consumes a majority of the State's water resources, approximately 78.5%.
The chart below shows how California's water resources are divided between the environmental, agricultural and urban sectors. Both agriculture and the urban sector have been required and forced to reduce their water use.
The only sector that has been "exempt" from water reductions is, in fact, the largest user of water - the environment.
They should make the environment illegal. It causes a lot of problems.
How much is dedicated to the bay area smelt?
SOme of Californistan's biggest movers and shakers are also among the biggest users of water.
They have lists of CA government types who use over 1000 gallons of water DAILY (article title: Top Ten Water Wasters in California).
I can use 1200 gallons a month, if I splurge.
probably the required delta outflow of 7%
I am not sure I even come close to that, lol

Deport the millions of illegal aliens occupying California and consuming your water.
Governor Brown should have a talk with this “Mother Nature”.
He seems like a real wimp.
The “environment?”
I can’t wait to hear that the “moon” and “unicorns” were two of the top five users, as well.
I’d love to know the billing address for Mother Nature.
And marijuana agriculturists.

Correction: POT Farmers Using 80% of California’s Water ?
Thank you GeronL !
tsk tsk tsk- you’re a ‘water consumption denier’
It’s man fault, and that is settled science, the debate is over- so get ready to pay out the wazoo for something nature is doing
Pot farmers may use a lot of water, but it is in the northern part of the state, and I doubt if they are irrigating it where they hide it. Growing cotton there is ridiculous as are some other high water use crops. How much do they do with water sparing drip irrigation? Why aren’t farmers charged enough for water to make them take conservation and crop change seriously? There ought to be pool fees to pay for desalination and reservoirs. Do people use pool covers when not in use to reduce evaporation?
Here is an article discussing the seriousness of the situation, the potential impact on our food supply, etc. Lots of comments, a number informative with interesting links.

How dare they! kill the farmers that supply us with food so that we may drink water....... they chant!
I doubt the Hollywood leftists will be giving up their swimming pools, lavish spas and long showers, but will still criticize the masses for wasting water with showering and flushing.
Maybe covering those hundreds of miles of concrete canals would help. It would cost a lot but they could do that instead of building that $10 billion train.
