Maryland's student government joins push to have stadium's name changed [Byrd Stadium]

If student groups have their way, Maryland’s Byrd Stadium could be getting a new name.

A proposal to have the stadium’s name changed was backed by the student government Wednesday night amid protests that the stadium’s namesake held beliefs contrary to the school’s core principles.

H.C. “Curley” Byrd was a former university president from 1936 to 1954, and helped raise funds to get the stadium built in 1950. He also was a well-known racist, who prevented African-Americans from playing sports at Maryland until 1951 and fought for the separation of black and white students.

‘This man was the president for 18 years and raised funds to build the stadium; but since he doesn’t think like we do, we should totally disregard everything he has done.’

Yep thats a liberal for ya....

They need to change more than that:

Mary-land is a sexist name. It needs to go.
The Terrapin is, I guess, a form of endangered turtle. That’s exploitive.

So, they should get with the times and change the state to Obamaland, change the mascot to crabs and change the stadium name to honor retiring senator Barbara Mikulski.

Therefore, the new stadium name should be something like “The People’s Mikulski Obamaland Crabs Stadium.”

Much more diverse and politically correct, dontcha think?

I think Curley Byrd was the reason Bear Bryant left Maryland.

You can’t have two bosses and I think Curley wanted to control the football team too. I do think Bryant respected him.

That’s right. Next they will find he said some disparaging things about a homosexual back in his day. That will really be the nail in the coffin.

While they’re at it have them convince W. Virginia to change the name of the Robert C. Byrd tollway (I-64/77). Drives me nuts whenever I go to N. Carolina.

I sometimes wonder how George Washington has evaded these attacks. He was one of the largest, if not the largest slave holder in Virginia.

A drop in the Ocean for a revered Democrat high-ranking KKK officer.

Oh, it's coming. It's like I've been saying, once they get rid of "Redskins", they will go after the "Washington" next.

Would the official portrait show him with or without the sheets?

BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, the University work with students, alumni, faculty/staff, athletics, and Capital One to find a suitable name for the football stadium.”

They could name it "Capital One" stadium, except... hm, no. "Communist One" might be too blatant to cut it with the alumni, and same with "Socialist One." I've got it: JAM Stadium — Justice Against Microaggressions! Or "The POS — Perpetually Offended Stadium!

Wonder if ol' racist Byrd was a Democrat? Somebody needs to find out and post it all over the Twitterverse.

I think Curley Byrd was the reason Bear Bryant left Maryland.

According to Wikipedia, that is true. Byrd reinstated a player whom Bryant had benched for bad behavior, and Bryant resigned in protest, as well he should have. See the link at post 16.

After reading that bio, Curley was one heck of a man.

The Byrds of Virginia (and Maryland and West Virginia) were one of the most prominent families in America. Winston Churchill visited Virginia in the 30s and stayed with the Byrd family.

Robert Byrd was kin to the Byrd family. Although he was adopted, he was still blood kin.
