4.2 million have lost driver’s licenses because of unpaid fees
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | April 8, 2015 | Bob Egelko

Unpaid traffic fines and mushrooming fees have left 4.2 million Californians with suspended driver’s licenses — more than one-sixth of the licenses issued statewide — with poor people the hardest-hit, according to a newly published study that criticizes policies that take drivers off the road because of debts they can’t pay.

California law enforcement are no longer agencies to protect and serve the public but rather serve state and local governments by enforcing their extortion programs. We the California citizens are like the medieval serfs being preyed upon by the tax collecting agents of the lords and barons. Where's Robin Hood when we need him?

poor and minorities hardest hit? does that mean that due to disparate impact, as Eric Holder might say, that the state has has to change criteria for suspending licenses??? Just wondering where they are going with this.

Calif cops are revenue officers.

A tow is $550 and each night in impound is $70.

Retrieving an essential item like a wallet from an impounded car is impossible.

If you’re illegal often the car isn’t towed.

They’re just allocating funds to the liability insurance they know they need to have.

Not having a license has never been a deterrent to illegals driving, hell they don't even get their cars impounded like other peoples do, the cops let them call someone to come pick it up. Now me? I would have my car impounded and be out hundreds of dollars to get it back, and not before thirty days had passed.

It’s the democrats plan to free them from jobs so they can’t pay their fines, then free them from driving so they don’t need their cars.

When they take the clothes off their backs, they’ll be totally free, the democrat way!!!

I got a couple of parking tickets alone in these few months. waste of time contesting it. It’s a simple concept to understand really. You can pay your insurance and gas for your car, but you can’t pay your ticket? If you have no dough for your car, take the bus.

What is the big deal?

They will always a few Islamic terrorists, criminal illegals,
and narcoterrorists — none of whom need licenses,
and are released after every felony — to drive them
around.

Can’t afford their driver’s license? How do they pay for the car, repairs, tires, gasoline, and insurance? How many of them own cellphones? Can they defer their next tattoo until after they pay for renewing their driver’s license? Inquiring minds want to know.

Just more of the never ending push for more socialism.

You cannot squeeze blood from a turnip. The fines in California are too damn high. They are really taxes. Minor first time infractions are over $400 or $500. The red light cameras (scameras) generate huge fines AND cause accidents. The economy in California sucks and there are a lot of good people (not everbody in California is bad) who simply do not have the money to pay the exorbitant fines.

Yup, because "they" know no one will come to get the damn thing. I remember years back when travelling to CA to see family with my then fiancee, I told her, watch, we'll hit the I-5 and there will be a beat up clunker with an engine fire on the side of the road. We weren't on the I-5 for five minutes when low and behold, bunch of illegals waving their flannels trying to fan the fires out. My point is, a lot of the vehicles illegals drive cost more to impound than the damn thing is worth.

Not deadbeats just citizens. I got two talking on cell phone tickets. A $25 ticket that went to $155 each due to fees imposed by state and local governments. My wife forgot to put
this years tags on her care which resulted in a $250 ticket. My son drove in the car pool lane and got nailed for $376. Roll a red light in Palo Alto and it’s $800. These fines can devastate a family’s budget and the lords and barons do not care.
