Inward-looking election campaign reflects Britain's global retreat

Britain's membership of the European Union hangs on the outcome of a knife-edge election in four weeks' time, but the issue and that of the country's wider global role have been largely absent from a campaign narrowly focused on domestic worries.

It's not unusual for British elections to be dominated by schools, hospitals and taxes, but foreign policy debate has rarely been so slight as before the May 7 vote.

Many diplomats say this reflects Britain's shuffle from the global stage and a self-inflicted downgrading of its military and diplomatic muscle.

"While much of the world seems to be going to hell in a hand basket, there has been little talk about Britain’s international role and responsibilities," Chris Patten, Britain's last governor of Hong Kong, said in a Project Syndicate commentary.

"The UK was once famous for punching above its weight in global affairs, but perhaps the country no longer really matters much – if only because it does not want to matter," the former Conservative Party chairman and European Commissioner said.

Entering the fray of Britain’s election campaign, Tony Blair has declared his support for Labour leader Ed Miliband.

Ahead of the ballot on May the 7th, the former Labour prime minister also pleaded for Britain to stay in the European Union.

“I believe passionately that leaving Europe would leave Britain diminished in the world,” he said.

“(It would also) do significant damage to our economy, and – less obviously, but just as important to our future – would go against the very qualities that mark us out still as a great global nation.”

That story in the “Daily Telegraph” leaked from an official government document about the SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon supposedly saying Cameron would be a better PM than Miliband is pretty stinky.

OCameron, the supporter of the anti-Israel deal with Iran and the PM who has doubled his country’s national debt, failed to curb immigration and so on is so lacking.

A possible outcome of this election if no one gets a majority will be an official Uniparty government involving the Tories and Labour.

If Britain shed itself of the shackles of the EU, it could work to build the Commonwealth of Nations into a powerful trading bloc. I would like to see that happen.

Time to re-think the direction England is taking. Will UK become three states? England, Wales, Scotland? or will she continue to be Great Britain? She must be herself—but a zone in a larger Germania (UE). the Socialist state has failed—Time to be great again.

Actually this is typical of all countries who venture this far into Socialism.

All future elections become about nothing but maintaining or enhancing social benefits. “Conservatives” are reduced to arguing that they can manage the giveaway programs more efficiently. No time or energy left for global concerns.

It’s part of Obama’s deliberate globalist plan to take us to this same place.
