Politico reports, Ted Cruz thunders about what he calls a fundamentally unserious U.S. defense policy, but when he had a chance to weigh in during Senate Armed Services Committee hearings, he rarely showed up. Cruz, who announced last week hes running for president, has the committees worst attendance record by far. His spokeswoman responds, Sen. Cruz is deeply engaged in defense and national security issues. He never hesitates to defend American sovereignty and has established a remarkable track record leading on these matters. Cruz later chimed in, Its not like Ive been at the beach drinking a pina colada. What to make of this?
First, saying you were busy furthering your own presidential ambitions is a poor excuse for not showing up to do your current job. But the flap raises two more important issues.
Cruz, of course, has not accomplished much of anything in public life after his stint as Texas solicitor general. He is a man in a hurry, and he has used the Senate as a platform to try to leap to his ultimate goal: president. He is entitled to do so, but then he must bear the brunt of voters resentment that he is using the Senate as a stepping stone and is not taking the business of oversight and lawmaking seriously. His lack of experience, indeed, his lack of constructive contribution to the country, is a problem that will not go away soon.
Moreover, Cruz has been inconsistent on national security, which is becoming the most important issue in the 2016 race. He has been outspoken on Russia and critical of the presidents treatment of Israel and foolishness with regard to Iran concessions. But he has been late to and not specific on the issue of how much we should spend on national security. He

The WaPo is an excellent barometer to truth. If they hate it, it’s the truth. If they like it, it’s a lie.

And Rubin again, to boot.
I’m rooting for Cruz, but am confused by his not attending something he clearly has opinions on. He is getting paid to represent his constituents, so he could at least show up.
If it turns out that this is all a lie, then I will take back my statement. Considering the source, it wouldn’t be a shock.
You mean he didn't take the bold stand to vote 'Present'?
Jennifer Rubin seems awfully interested in Cruz.
Jennifer Rubin is on the Jeb Bush payroll.
“Jennifer Rubin is on the Jeb Bush payroll.”
hehe... The libs don’t get it, do they? They tarnished the Bush name so much that Republicans are going to stay far, far away from him.
There is no way they will carry him over the finish line in the primary.
Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Larry O. Spencer (foreground, left) testifies during the Senate Armed Services Committee's hearing on current military readiness in Washington, D.C., March 25, 2015.
Jeb Bush and Jennifer Rubin along with Rubio, McCain, Graham and too many to name are on the payroll of The Cheap Labor Express.
They are paid to make sure we do not get border security or enforcment of our laws. Jennifer and others of The Ministry Of Propaganda are paid to convince us to give up the rule of law and our country without a fight.
The RNC has been paid to make sure we do not elect a President who will stop the cheap labor importation that they call immigration.
I'd love to see the Senate and Congressional rules amended so that no elected representative may vote "present," which is an obnoxious cop-out. I'd like to see the only options to be either a yes or no vote. If that can be accomplished, then anybody that cares can see how their rep or senator voted on any issue.
Another thing I'd like to see, that I may get flamed a bit for, is for the government to spend money sending out small booklets on how each state's representative voted on any bills for that cycle, so that they cannot say one thing then vote the other way.
There’s a very good reason for all of the empty chairs. Our dirtbag representatives don’t do a blasted thing after they win election.
The real problem is government is too big and many of these meetings wouldn't be necessary if it weren't trying to control all aspects of our life and squeeze every dollar they can out of us for "their" next project!
