MSNBC correspondent Jeremy Lancaster sat down with government official Darrin Cornia to discuss recent rumors that have been in circulation in regard to registered motorcycle owners being placed on a classified FBI gang list.

After a few moments of introduction, Lancaster bluntly asked the following question,” Mr. Cornia, if I were to make the statement, all registered motorcycle owners are currently showing on a classified FBI gang list, would the statement be true or false?

Cornia responded by saying, “That would be a true statement, the FBI has been collecting and compiling Department of Motor Vehicles and Drivers License Division records for the purpose of adding those that own motorcycles to a classified gang list since 1994.

"It’s nothing more than collecting and utilizing data. We may not like to admit it, but the truth of the matter is that those that own and operate motorcycles are 67% more likely to be involved in illegal or criminal activity than those that do not own or operate a motorcycle."

I can't believe that statistic. With the millions and millions of people who own and ride, how could the criminal element possibly outnumber law abiding citizens?

That’s “67% more likely”. If 3% of non-bikers are criminals, that means 5% of bikers are.

And they are 130% more likely to end up a grease spot.

The statistic means that if the non-bike-owning population has, for example, a crime rate of 3%, the bike-owning population has a crime rate of 5%, which is 67% higher than the non-bike-owning rate.

That isn’t what they are saying. I am not sure I believe the statistic but all they are saying is the rate id 67% higher, not total number.

eg (made up stats)
3 out of 1,000 non-bikers are criminals
5 out of 1,000 bikers are criminals

5 is 67% higher than 3

The claim here is not that 67% of motorcycle owners are criminals. It is that the fraction of motorcycle owners “involved in illegal or criminal activity” is 67% greater than the fraction of non-motorcycle-owners “involved in illegal or criminal activity”.

Suppose for the sake of discussion that 10% of people who do not own motorcycles are “involved in illegal or criminal activity”. According to this claim, then, 16.7% of motorcycle owners are “involved in illegal or criminal activity”. I don’t know if this is true.

Gee, I remember when the biker gangs were referred to as 1%ers, and IIRC they still refer to themselves that way..........they will not be amused.

All kidding aside, I agree. I find it unbelievable that 67% are more likely to be involved in illegal or criminal activity. I’d like to see how they arrived at that number. Also, I’m not happy bout being in some fbi database for absolutely NO reason.

It’s wonderful that a federal agency keeps a suspect list made up of people who have no discernible crime other then buying cheap transportation.

How American of them.

A little question for the IRA sympathizer who runs that agency....do you keep a list of illegal aliens that you have gleaned from suspicious employment records and tax identification numbers?

I can't believe that statistic. With the millions and millions of people who own and ride, how could the criminal element possibly outnumber law abiding citizens?

What are these law abiding citizens you speak of?

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it. . . There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with."

It’s a fake story. It is not the Washington Post.

The thread should be pulled because it falsely attributes the source to the Washington Post, WaPo.

And btw, 67% more likely doesn’t mean 67% of motorcyclists.

Still, that number is made up. A hoax.
