San Francisco Saint Mary’s Cathedral Drenches Homeless With Water To Keep Them Away
CBS Local ^ | 03/18/2015 | Doug Sovern

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — KCBS has learned that Saint Mary’s Cathedral, the principal church of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, has installed a watering system to keep the homeless from sleeping in the cathedral’s doorways.

The cathedral, at Geary and Gough, is the home church of the Archbishop. There are four tall side doors, with sheltered alcoves, that attract homeless people at night.

“They actually have signs in there that say, ‘No Trespassing,’” said a homeless man named Robert.

But there are no signs warning the homeless about what happens in these doorways, at various times, all through the night. Water pours from a hole in the ceiling, about 30 feet above, drenching the alcove and anyone in it.

The shower ran for about 75 seconds, every 30 to 60 minutes while we were there, starting before sunset, simultaneously in all four doorways. KCBS witnessed it soak homeless people, and their belongings.

Fences with an electric charge.

It worked for us when we had a farmette. Chased off all the undesirable pests.

No, responsible would not be illegally installing the system, and possibly violating the water usage regs, and very importantly, not putting up a sign that they would be drenched and would be facing the rest of the winter night and possibly for days, wet.

You are trying to sell all of that as done well, with the Christian approach that we would expect from a Priest.

It isn’t done well at all, it is revealing that the system was built, and then concealed from everyone until the water drenches them.

That’s also not to mention the mentally unstable...who end up in the prison system.....many mentally ill are also drug addicted.

It was a huge mistake when the liberals decoded all the Institutions needed to be closed.....but as usual everything they do backfires.

But because this is a Christian Church - the haters are gonna hate.

That is the Left winger version. Let me correct that for you...

This is the Free Republic version:

But because this is a Roman Catholic/Papist/Priest Child Molester/Mary Worshipper Christian Church - the haters are gonna hate.

Thats great Catholic christian charity at work there.

The Church has countless ministries for the homeless and the poor. They only ask that they don't pee and leave trash on the church steps.

Charity/caritas/love isn't brainless.

No, people learn that water will be dumped on them, only when it happens.

There is no warning, it will be interesting to see if the city fines them for what everyone seems to be calling an illegal plumbing project.

Not Catholic, but seems pretty reasonable to me...

Sometimes a pest is just a pest.

Whether it’s the 4, 6, 8 legged kind or in this case, the 2 legged variety.

Obviously telling them to leave and all the other options were exhausted.....so you're argument “holds no water”. Until these people go completely down they will never seek help....and their brains are so brain-fried they would never help themselves.

How about you open your doorway and give them protection from the elements....or do a few drivebys and take them to a shelter yourself?

The Church has countless ministries for the homeless and the poor. They only ask that they don't pee and leave trash on the church steps.

None of that covers what this story is about.

This doesn't need to be twisted into a story about defending the homeless, or what Catholic charities exist elsewhere, this about the terrible judgement and attitude of the people at this particular church.

Why don’t you just admit it. You’re inflating this incident just to throw mud at the Catholic Church.

After all, they’re full of child molesting pedophile priests who march in Gay Parades, right?

And (horrors of all horrors!) they illegally water the homeless!

"But they do. The Archdiocese of San Francisco (and other SF Catholic groups) supports overnight shelters, soup kitchens, food pantries, and substance abuse recovery programs.

They just don't want people defecating and urinating in their entryways. If they were camping out and pissing on your front door, you'd find it unacceptable, I think."

Good reply. It combines facts with a zing factor.

How about the jerks running the church get a permit for the plumbing system they illegally installed, and then put up a clear warning that the porch area is automatically sprayed down every hour during the night?

Did they avoid putting up a warning sign because they were just jerks and wanted to ambush the homeless? Or because they didn’t want to have a sign saying that they had done unpermitted plumbing work?

Dang, did you not read this story and the updates? THIS CHURCH has many homeless shelters and even allows the homeless on THESE grounds, they just don’t want them crapping in the doorways and leaving dangerous trash there as well.

The homeless WERE WARNED. Did they post a sign, NO, but they were warned.

You obviously are the type of person who thinks you should be able to sue the shoe company because your shoes don’t have a little tag telling you to tie your dang laces! That is IGNORANCE.

The church tried other methods, they did not listen. They warned them that this was going to happen, and it did. Nothing unloving, nor anti-Christian in that AT ALL!

As for the possible city fines, render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s!
