Even if Likud loses, Netanyahu could become prime minister
McClatchyDC ^ | March 15, 2015 | Joel Greenberg

JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his party trailing in polls leading up to Tuesday’s vote, entered the final two days of his campaign Sunday with one card still unplayed: Israel’s complicated electoral system, which doesn’t guarantee that the party with the most seats in Parliament forms the government.

The final polls published ahead of the election Tuesday gave opposition leader Isaac Herzog the edge, with his Zionist Union alliance likely to win four more seats than Netanyahu’s Likud party when the votes are counted.

But that does not mean victory, unless Herzog can form a governing coalition. Neither Likud nor the Zionist Union will garner anything near the 61-seat majority of the 120-seat Parliament required to form a government. So the question becomes which candidate, Herzog or Netanyahu, is more likely to persuade enough of Israel’s smaller parties to join a coalition that commands at leasts 61 votes.

That candidate is most likely to get the nod from Israel’s president, Reuvin Rivlin, a Likud party member who assumed the post in July....

The two big parties have not gained a majority of the seats between them since the 1980s.

A coalition government is built by very small parties coming to an agreement - all of them small and a new government probably won’t be in place until May or June.

The Right will hold at least a 10 seat advantage over the Left. The Arabs won’t join the left and the Heredi won’t either. In the end, it will likely be the new coalition having a 15-20 seat lead on the opposition, and Un-Zionist Union will be the opposition.

Where did this Zionist Union party come from with its campaign "for the middle class" and its focus on poverty? Smacks of being the puppets of the American 'Rat consultants manipulating the issues in this Israeli election.

The number one issue obviously should be the security and survival of Israel in the face of the rise of Islamic radicals in the Middle East, especially Iran and ISIS. If Israeli voters think along those lines, Netanyahu is a shoo-in.

This posted piece from McClatchy is typical of the American MSM mantra on the Israeli election, conjuring up optimism for Netanyahu's opposition and doubts among pro-Netanyahu forces. The American MSM is thus doing its usual thing, promoting what the American Democrats would love to see: the overthrow of Netanyahu orchestrated from the Obama White House.

Needless to say, we have to hope that their dreams are short-circuited by Israeli voters with common sense.

Yes, the masters of propaganda are out in force, attempting to make it a “wave” election.

We have our own ZU cheering section here on FR (Traveler?). Like the “Zionist” Union the disguise their true motives behind Orwellian language. ZU is far from Zionist. The opposite.

You haven’t seen me anywhere cheering for the Zionist Union or urging people to vote for them or support them.

IN ADDITION ... you have seen me support Netanyahu, with me saying that he is the best Prime Minister for Israel and that I support him 100%.

You’re just lying again ... like you did before.

I don’t think the election will wind up deadlocked; I also don’t believe the leftist sources’ pre-election last-minute “polls”, which were probably generated by some current, ex-, and future “community organizers” from the US, and paid out of the billions Zero and his gang of criminals have laundered from “green” (fake) industries and whatnot. Pretty sure Likud forms the coalition, Bibi’s hand is probably strengthened, and Tzipi the Pinhead is OUT.

A little early for celebration. If Likud’s extra seats come from parties on the Right, Bibi’s no stronger than he has been. If the breakout of parties stays too close, it may take until most of the just-elected members are seated before military and absentee ballots are counted and could change a few seats.

Bibi was very probably going to form the next government anyway. It still is a question of how strong he can be.
