A Florida veteran who is facing foreclosure for insisting on displaying a small American flag in a flower pot on his front stoop is telling his homeowner's association to "bring it on."
The flag is worth fighting for, 73-year-old Larry Murphree, of Jacksonville, told FoxNews.com Friday. If they want to foreclose, bring it on. Im getting calls from all over the county to stand up. Thats what I'm going to do.
Murphree's homeowners association at Tides Condominium at Sweetwater began hitting him with fines of $100 a day last year for violating his homeowners associations flag display rules. But instead of paying the fines, Murphree let them pile up - and kept his flag on display. Now he owes more than $8,000, and neither side will budge.
I just kind of dug in my heels," he said. "Its worth fighting for. Its a small flag but it stands for a big thank you and it shows the love and respect I have for my country.
On Wednesday, Murphree told Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends that his fight for the flag is with the board that runs the association.
I would think if anybody on that board told me they served in the military, Id have to ask them which side, Murphree, who served six years as an Air Force air traffic controller during the Vietnam War, said on theshow.
The fight started in 2011 and landed in court a year later where the two sides reached a settlement in which Murphree agreed to display his flag in compliance with association rules. But two weeks later, the board changed the rules, saying flags could only be displayed on a pole outside the garage and that flower pots were only for flowers.

Then read the HOA rules before you buy the house.
Bring a bus load of grannies with iPhones to video the board of directors
Maybe the HOA was formed >after< he bought the house. ... just asking ...
Reading the headline, I thought this was another marijuana story.
Plus the HOA decided to change the rules AFTER they reached an agreement with Mr. Murphree concerning this matter.
Bet they would not do this to someone with a muslim flag.
Better yet....don't ever buy a house in a neighborhood that has an HOA.
That flag in the pot is so unobtrusive ... hardly worth mentioning. It’s not like he had this huge thing flying from his balcony.
FTHOA
As I read the article the two parties went to court and they agreed that he could display the flag IAW the HOA rules. Then a few weeks later they changed the rules.
WTFO?
Changed the rules and are using the changed rules to screw the property owner? Me thinks there is a lot more here than just a flag dispute.
Sidebar - wonder if the local chapters of the Patriot Riders would like to hold a rally near by one weekend - on both Saturday and Sunday?
You didn’t even read the article.
Knee jerk reaction on your part.
He can have a flag - just has to display it properly. Jeez...
We’re looking for a vacation/future retirement home in the Vegas area. We can’t find one without an HOA!
“Then read the HOA rules before you buy the house.”
Doesn’t always work... we did so carefully, then the demographics changed after 911 when more liberals move here from NYC. A liberal board of directors got entrenched and pretty soon our association turned very progressive. Dues shot up, new rules piled up quickly, they got a lock on the manager, attorney and newspaper... now they can’t be shaken loose. It is like a little municipality where the executive, legislation and judicial branch are all in the same small group of hands.
HOA’s are a big gamble no matter how careful you are and we’ll never move to one again :-(
I fly my flag proudly...screw the HOA
Me too. I thought the article was about an old hippie who salutes a flag with a marijuana flower on it.
***What good are HOA’s?***
They want to keep their neighborhoods looking like....
Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes all the same
There’s a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same
Just wondering but did you read the article before you posted that ?
