Gov. Scott Walker has indicated he supports a bill that would end the 48-hour waiting period to purchase a handgun.
One question:
Why?
Milwaukee police officials don't want the 48-hour waiting period eliminated. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett doesn't want the 48-hour waiting period ended. And, living in Milwaukee's central city, I certainly don't want it eliminated.
I've seen firsthand how arguments can quickly escalate to violence, and I certainly don't want to make it that much easier for people to get their hands on handguns and I say this as a legal gun owner.
Walker said he wants to end the 48-hour waiting period for handgun purchases because he wants the state to be "a leader" on this issue.
Translation:
When I go before the National Rifle Association with this idea, the money will start to flow right into my coffers for a presidential run.
Wisconsin already is the leader in plenty of negative statistics. Drunken driving. Black male incarceration. Destabilization of unions. What's one more shot to the already shot-through fabric of this state.
When I asked Nik Clark, president of Wisconsin Carry Inc., about Walker's idea, Clark tried to persuade me that changing the law will do more to help people living in the central city than hurt them.
"When those rapes were taking place and the cops could not catch the rapists why would we tell a woman walking from the bus stop at night to get home that she has to wait to get a gun to protect herself?" he said.

And both of these are well within the control of these individuals.
I don’t think the number “48” appears anywhere in the United States Constitution, and it definitely does not appear adjacent to the words “hour” and “waiting period” in the 2nd Amendment.
Walker is just a big flip flopper! pro amnesty! He’s exactly like Romney! /s
Just wanted to get my dig in before the anti walker freepers comment.
I wonder how many times the author has seen the combatants call time out to shop the local gun store. His premise is absurd.
Let’s have Constitution Carry while we’re at it. Why do I need a permit, and spend money, to access my second amendment right. The libs get exorcised over photo ID for voting, calling the cost of its acquisition a poll tax. Why is the cost of my CC permit any less heinous? (Rhetorical question, of course)
A 48 hour waiting period to exercise the right to keep and bear arms is as unconstitutional as the same waiting period to exercise the right to free speech. Walker should push for and sign a repeal of that useless and unconstitutional infringement of our God-given rights.
James Causey uses the leftist assumption: anything not allowed by law should be forbidden.
His question, why should Wisconsin repeal its 48 hour waiting period presupposes that all regulation is good, that there are no costs, and that any gun restriction is a good gun restriction.
For a person who believes in limited government, all of those assumptions are false.
Does a person have to be licensed to use a gun before they can purchase one? I could see the point of a 48-hour hold to get some basic training on gun safety and use if the purchaser wasn't already licensed to use that firearm.
“Sorry, ma’am. It’s a shame that your ex has sworn he’s coming to get you tonight. I’m afraid the law says I can’t let you take this home for 48 hours.”
“One question: Why?”
The question should be asked of imposing the wait, not removing it.
Rights do not need to be justified or explained.
If you get pulled over, it takes a cop about 5 minutes to find out if you’re a felon. Allow gun store owners to run an immediate check with dispatch like a cop can and preventing sales to felons is now mitigated (of course, they’ll still get them on the black market).
I believe there are more good guys than bad guys, hence we’re better off if everyone is armed.
What a stupid argument.
Anyone who is going to hold onto their anger long enough to drive to a gun store, fill out the paperwork to buy a gun and then return to the scene without having second thoughts is going to be able to nurse their anger for 48 hours.
It's a shame that (1) criminals don't obey signs or even court orders, and (2) even without a gun, the vast majority of men could overpower the vast majority of women. People are inherently unequal, and sometimes they need an equalizer.
I’ve even heard women relate what “the ex” said about a protection order.
“Ya, go ahead and wave that piece of paper in my face when I come after you.”
I there a 48-hour waiting period for an abortion in Wisconsin?
Time to check into a hotel for the next 2 days.
Just to clarify, my previous post was just a practical solution to the current situation.
I am actually in favor of the elimination of the “hot blood” 48 hour delay in getting your gun.
I remember here in Calif. in the 70’s when I bought my first gun as a teenager, there was a 2 day waiting period but I do not recall having to fill out paperwork. Maybe I did but I don’t remember it.
