The Islamic State group said Tuesday a US citizen carried out a suicide attack against Iraqi forces involved in an operation to retake the jihadist-held city of Tikrit.
“The brother Abu Dawud al-Amriki (may Allah accept him) launched himself with his explosives-laden truck against a gathering” of Iraqi forces and militiamen, an IS radio bulletin said.
The report gave no details on the man’s identity.
It claimed that dozens of Iraqi forces were killed and wounded in the blast, but did not provide further details, such as pictures or footage.
There was no immediate confirmation of the attack from other sources.
Pro-IS social media accounts said the attack was carried out Monday near Samarra, the other main city in Salaheddin province.
Samarra is controlled by the government and has been launchpad for a broad military operation officially launched Monday to wrest back Tikrit — further north up the Tigris River — from the jihadists.
Army commanders say the jihadists have been hampering the advance by resorting to guerrilla tactics, such as car bombs, booby traps and sniper fire.
The jihadist group, which took control of swathes of Iraq last year and also holds parts of Syria, frequently uses foreign fighters for suicide missions.

The explosion was truly impressive. It created a shock wave and a big black cloud. Who knows if it killed more than the savant who was driving the vehicle. The blessing is that self-blasters are one-use throwaways.

What an epitaph. I like the uncertainly of it, too, because his suicide and attack may all may be for naught.
ISIS is using a lot of their recruits as cannon-fodder, a Chechen said as much so through the Radio Free Europe website and told people not to join them.

It has come and gone in popularity through the history of Islam, and other cultures (e.g. kamikazes). Both Sunnis and Shia do it. Sunnis are bigger on it right now.
The resurgence of suicide bombing in modern Islam was launched by the Iranian backed bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut in 1983. The use of suicidal tactics had become common during the massive Iran/Iraq War (80-88).
When it was demonstrated to be so effective in getting the Americans to withdraw, it was pursued by many Sunni terrorist groups, gradually building the extensive infrastructure that exists today to promote, recruit and manipulate suicide bombers.
The Shia Nazari Ishmailis, the original “assassins” were famous for sending murderers who would sacrifice their own life to get their target. The Moros of the Southern Phillipines, famous for “running amok” to kill as many infidels as possible before being cut down (which inspired the US Army to upgrade their sidearm to .45 caliber in 1911) were Sunnis.
Oh well. I hope he paid into social security for a few years.
