Douglas lashes out after Ducey overturns firings (Common Core in Arizona)

State schools Superintendent Diane Douglas lashed out at Gov. Doug Ducey after he overturned her attempted firing of two state Board of Education employees, accusing him of infringing on her statutory and constitutional duties and of surrounding himself with a cabal of Common Core supporters.

Douglas asserted that she has the right to hire or fire Board of Education employees. She noted that a law says the Board of Education can hire staff “on the recommendation” of the superintendent of public instruction. “Governor Ducey apparently views himself as both governor and superintendent of Schools,” Douglas said in a press statement.

On Wednesday, Douglas fired Board of Education Executive Director Christine Thompson and her deputy, Sabrina Vasquez. But Ducey overturned her decision, saying only the board has the authority to fire its employees. “We don’t think anybody’s been fired,” Ducey told reporters. “The board has the legal authority, and they have not yet acted. So that’s where we are.” Ducey added, “We’re going to follow the law in this administration.”

...

Douglas said she is not surprised that Ducey’s office supports the retention of “two liberal staff” who have publicly committed to supporting Common Core. She said they blocked attempts to repeal or change the standards, which the Board of Education adopted in 2010. She also suggested that Ducey supported the AzMerit test that will be used to test students on Common Core standards because he wanted to lower test scores as a way to funnel more students into charter schools.

...

Former Superintendent Lisa Graham Keegan, a Common Core supporter who endorsed Douglas’ Democratic opponent in the 2014 election, is a staunch ally of the governor. Keegan and Ducey held a tele-town hall on education issues last week, and did not invite Douglas to participate.

I was concerned about Doug Ducey (R-GOPe) from the beginning. He had a lot of corporate money behind his campaign and was cozy with John McCain (always a red flag). And now we can see his true colors. He has been in office just over a month and has already further spread the fracture in the AZGOP with his actions that are very PRO-Common Core as well as reveals what appears to be a mandate to damage Tea Party-supported officials. Diane Douglas (R-Tea) was elected because she PROMISED to go after Common Core, and with these firings she made good on that promise immediately.

Arizonans should be VERY concerned about Gov. Ducey cozying up to Lisa Graham Keegan. Keegan was quoted in an article published in a leftist rag that is not allowed to be posted to Free Republic: "When you've got one elected official (Douglas) who's on, let's call it an 'independent trajectory,' as we saw — that's all right," she said. "Most everybody else is moving lockstep — not exactly in agreement on all the different (education) policy agendas, but on the fact that we all have rules to play here ... and we're going to play by those rules."

He is already proving me right. And McCain is not a red flag, he’s a black plague : )

I hate getting faked out by GOPe misrepresenting themselves!

I never saw any Tea Party warnings about him either here on FR or talk radio.

That’s because no one knew. We suspected, but I suspect everyone these days.

Yep, he campaigned with Diane Douglas, wholly supporting her repeal of Common Core. And then last week, he held a tele-conference on education WITH former (leftist, pro-Common Core) Superintendent Keegan...and Douglas, the current elected Superintendent, was not even invited.

... I believe Doug has the right combination to serve Arizona with his proven private sector skills and his record of conservative leadership. That’s why I’m proud to join Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and many other conservatives in endorsing Doug Ducey for Arizona governor.

The Democrat was a nutcase who supported Bloomberg’s gun control efforts. That was the choice and why we all voted for Ducey.

The concern may be well placed, but it’s not clear to me who’s in the right here. For example, one of Douglas’ big issues with Ducey appears to be his support for charter schools (aka school choice). If it were as simple as which do you support more (1) killing common core or (2) school choice, I’d take (2).

At the end of the day, the notion of intrusting education to the state alone is a bigger problem than precisely what they teach, as the state could forever manipulate education to achieve their agenda. If we have options, like charter schools, we can send our kids to schools that don’t use Common Core or whatever the taste of the month in education is.

Cruz, Lee, Walker and Arpaio endorsed.

They picked the least bad of the top 3: Compassionate Morman Mayor Smith, Christine Jones and Ducey.

Smith was pro-amnesty and pro Kyoto.

Jones was like Ducey but had no record and had some big donors as well.

“The editorial board recommends Republican Air Force Col. Martha McSally (ret.) over incumbent Democrat Rep. Ron Barber in CD-2. The newspaper compliments her “impressive grasp of foreign policy.”

So the daily’s support of Doug Ducey?

It’s a no-brainer. Democrat Fred Duval is so problematic even the far left Arizona Republic realizes his potential to be a drag on the rest of the ticket. Besides, Ducey carries enough McEstablishment endorsers to make him palatable.”

Ducey pushed Douglas to this by excluding and marginalizing her. But she clearly overstepped her authority by doing this, a huge mistake, and now her position is greatly weakened.

My concern is more how cozy Ducey has become with Lisa “Common Core” Keegan. She’s out in the press singing praises of Ducey. The tele-town hall they held together happened last week, well before this event took place. Why on earth would you hold such a meeting with the FORMER school superintendent and shut out the current? Something’s rotten. I was suspicious of Dicey to start and now the alarm bells are ringing. (Ha...Dicey was a typo and I’ve decided to leave it.)

Yes indeed. I was wondering if Ducey is a typical left wing rino. I know that allowing common core brain washing agents of hell to teach is immoral and wrong. And the rinos sure seeem like democrats nowdays.

Lord Jesus, please save the children from the immoral public school systems of all evil socialist nations as they hate God, family and country and have turned the schools into a brothel of fools and liars.
