DENVER Two years after Colorado tightened its gun laws in response to mass shootings at a Connecticut elementary school and a suburban Denver movie theater, newly empowered Republicans here at the State Capitol are trying to repeal those measures, reviving an emotional debate over gun violence.
Once again, the legislature has become a stage for protests and wrenching testimony from families of people cut down by bullets. Lawmakers are sparring over Second Amendment freedoms and public safety, and arguing about the effectiveness of new measures that expanded background checks and reduced the size of ammunition magazines.
In the State Senate where Republicans, by one vote, won a majority in Novembers elections measures to undo the new background checks and allow legal gun owners to carry concealed handguns without a permit advanced this week after a committee vote split along party lines. The Republican measures are almost guaranteed to die in the Democratic-controlled House or be vetoed by the governor, a Democrat, but Republicans said they were following through on a core ideological issue.

I will never travel to that state again while these laws are in place.
Why not? The law doesn’t apply to tourists, only to residents, as insane as that is.
Sandy Hook was a hoax.
Yeah they can legally bring their normal and high capacity belt feed guns. ;-)
This is what happens when California liberals move to another state to flee high taxes. They create their own version of liberal nirvana in the state they move to.
What is depressing though is that as the libs leave Cal, they are replaced by even more liberal folks.
And, they are fleeing the disaster they created to recreate it elsewhere.
Maybe there should be a law which tells liberals which states they can live in so the rest of us don’t have to put up with their nonsense.
Hey; a fella can dream right!
Constitutional carry would be wonderful. But even it it git through the legislature gov chick n pooper would veto it. Colorado has been ruined by the California transplants and the illegals. I want my red state back.....
“most people appeared to be largely unbothered by the new laws.”
That’s because almost everyone is ignoring the new laws. Nearly 90% of the elected county sheriffs announced years ago that they wouldn’t attempt to enforce these new laws because they were so badly written they were unenforceable.
For instance, there’s no way to tell a “grandfathered” firearm magazine from a non-grandfathered one. In fact, high capacity magazines are already starting to show up for sale publicly in Colorado.
The law requiring intra-state instacheck transfers is so ambiguous that simply letting someone else hold a gun you own technically counts as a “transfer” and is a criminal violation. As a result, essentially no one in the state is going through the new transfer process for privately exchanged firearms as proven by before and after statistics on firearm transfers published by the Denver Post.
These new laws, however, DO turn most firearm-owning citizens of the state into criminals, so are ripe for selective enforcement, which is almost as good for the “Progressives” as if the laws actually accomplished anything else.
I wouldn’t mind a law saying there has to be a bonded armed guard at every theater or other venue that would be like shooting fish in a barrel.
I’ve read that the pot industry in Colo (which is 100% cash transactions) has produced a lot of private security jobs.
I guess that is the silver lining of the pot smoke cloud...
In fact that is probably now the safest place for an innocent person in danger to go. Dive into a pot shop.
I have taken 2 carry legal classes and have studied conceal carry restrictions in a number of states and Colorado is quite broad. We can carry almost anywhere and those silly little no guns allowed are not legally binding. We can carry in bars, restaurants, liquor stores, churches... I carried when i was an election judge for 2 weeks at the polling place. Granted Constitutional carry would be nice but Colorado isn’t as restrictive as many states. As stated the magazine law is a joke and most sheriffs like conceal carry folks. Oh we don’t have to announce we are carrying at a traffic stop either but most do as a courtesy.
Notice that the NYTs connects the legislation to a mass shooting, which would not have been prevented by the legislation, instead of Bloomberg spending, which it would not have passed without.
I tried posting several pro-2A comments at the NYT, and surprise, not a single one posted.
Effing POS rag.
Surprise, Surprise!
2nd Amendment bump for later...
Yep.
