Some things are easy to avoid.
Dont want to be hit by a train? Dont play on train tracks. Dont want your kid to get measles? Get them vaccinated. Cant afford to pay your employees more? Dont advocate for raising the minimum wage. Done and done.
But many granola-crunching, tofu-eating progressives think they can kale their way to a super immune system for their kids, so theyre skipping the vaccinations for measles and everything else. And other progressives are closing their businesses because the laws for which they advocated have sent them to the poorhouse.
To paraphrase President Barack Obamas friend and mentor, progressives chickens are coming home to roost.
The measles outbreak is a serious concern for people with suppressed immune systems and sane people everywhere. But its not a concern for idiots like Crystal McDonald. McDonald was featured in a New York Times story about the bizarre cult of wealthy, white progressives who think they can Prius and kale their kids into a super immune system and vaccines are for rednecks. How else to explain that Mississippi and West Virginia are first and second when it comes to immunized kindergarteners while kids are getting sick in droves in enlightened California?
McDonalds 16-year-old daughter was sent home from school in Palm Desert, Calif., for two weeks because her mother refuses to let her go where China was in the 15th century and get immunized. When begged by her daughter, who didnt want to fall behind in her advanced placement classes (and may well have a better understanding of science than her Luddite mother), to get the shots, Mommie Dumbest said, No, absolutely not. Id rather you miss an entire semester than you get the shot.
In lieu of rational thought, McDonald, according to the Times, cites that her daughter ate well and had never been to the doctor, and she insisted that her daughter was healthier than many classmates.
Not sure how never having gone to a doctor is a good thing for the parent of a 16-year-old to brag about, but the shes healthier than other kids argument is the dumbest part of McDonalds statement. Maybe shes never been sick, which is a dubious claim. But you know what else shes never been? Exposed to a serious and easily communicable, yet preventable, disease for which there are readily available immunizations.
Ms. McDonald has successfully, at least so far, played Russian Roulette with her kids health and come up with the empty chamber. But everyones luck runs out sooner or later.
I honestly dont care what McDonald does to her daughter (once fully mature enough to realize how cavalierly her mother treated her health I suspect she wont be a fan of mom), its the people around her I care about. There are plenty of people with suppressed immune systems who dont have the ability to look at McDonald and realize shes raising a petri dish for things that could kill them.
Im not for forced immunizations, but I am for the mutants who think they can healthy live away a virus being shamed for their ignorance. Either that or they be forced to take the COEXIST sticker off their Smart Car and slap it on their forehead so those who are at risk can see them coming.
Further north in enlightened California, sits Borderlands Books, a hotbed of sci-fi literature, or as the rest of us call it chick magnets.
The San Francisco nerd-locker is, like most other things in the Bay Area, very progressive. (Bet you thought I was going to say unshowered, which is probably also accurate.) So progressive, in fact, that when the city voted last year to raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour, the staffers threw their support (and presumably their Spock ear) behind the ballot measure. It passed.
After the joy of imposing a living wage on businesses subsided, the owners of Borderlands broke out their calculator and learned entry-level economics the hard way. The policy they wholeheartedly supported was going to be their doom.
They took to the stores website, to announce the sad news.
In November, San Francisco voters overwhelmingly passed a measure that will increase the minimum wage within the city to $15 per hour by 2018. Although all of us at Borderlands support the concept of a living wage in principal and we believe that its possible that the new law will be good for San Francisco — Borderlands Books as it exists is not a financially viable business if subject to that minimum wage. Consequently we will be closing our doors no later than March 31st. The cafe will continue to operate until at least the end of this year.
We won! Youre fired!
That simple fact would still be worth mocking, but the owners of Borderlands didnt stop there. They went on to explain in more detail why they had to go out of business, and in the course of that they reveal just how ignorant of simple economic principles they and their progressive brothers and sisters are.
Many businesses can make adjustments to allow for increased wages. The cafe side of Borderlands, for example, should have no difficulty at all. Viability is simply a matter of increasing prices. And, since all the other cafes in the city will be under the same pressure, all the prices will float upwards. But books are a special case because the price is set by the publisher and printed on the book. Furthermore, for years part of the challenge for brick-and-mortar bookstores is that companies like Amazon.com have made it difficult to get people to pay retail prices. So it is inconceivable to adjust our prices upwards to cover increased wages.
This isnt Econ-101, its Econ-098. This is making-change-level simple. Yet these geniuses couldnt connect those dots in their heads. If government raises the cost of doing business, prices increase. If you cant do that, either because you cant set your prices or consumers wont pay more for your products because they can get them somewhere else cheaper, youre done.
Lost on the intelligentsia of nerd haven is that if you raise the cost of things by forcing employers to pay employees more, the gains you were seeking will be lost (as well as jobs). So although their income increased, their buying power remains the same (and for soon-to-be former employees of Borderlands, it will decrease dramatically). Theyve just been moved from one steerage cabin on the Titanic to another.
Some things are impossible to foresee; others as easy as a sunrise. That choices and actions have consequences seems to fall firmly in the former category for many progressives.
But, as long and slow of a process as it is, it seems to be progressing for at least some of them. With any luck these reality wake-up calls wont just be reserved for Whole Foods hippie moms and those voted most likely to make it with a Tribble; hopefully theyll also hit 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue…or at least some fellow travelers in the media.
Another way of looking at it is that they are feathering their local nests (think they are protecting their kids) at the expense of the overall community (herd immunity and disease elimination). We all do it a little; progressives tend to do it a lot, because they are hypocrites. Those that are skipping vaccinations for their kids are implicitly hoping that the great majority of others do not.
Does not matter.
The MSM is in the full “blame Republican” mode and our politicians are their normal “answer in the most inept way possible” mode.
Result: It’s the fault of conservatives.
Sorry folks, but it’s really time to start thinking about splitting into two nations.
We know which one will be successful.
Remember the flood of unattended kids coming across the border? Remember how many of us said that in the near future there would be outbreaks of communicable diseases because of it?
Welcome to the near future. Have a nice day.
well, how many feathers does it take to buy a measles immunization? not a lot, if they are selling so well in mississippi.
re: “How else to explain that Mississippi and West Virginia are first and second when it comes to immunized kindergarteners while kids are getting sick in droves in enlightened California?”
How about the fact that California is over-run with illegal aliens?
That’s a different mechanism... illegals inject new disease vectors into a population, while the kale-eaters think that herd immunity is so high that their only risk is personal, from the unlikely vaccination reaction.
The South would likely have fared better in the Civil War had it resolved to forego slaves before seceding. You don’t go begging God to be a free country while enslaving men. Well you can, but you won’t like the answer.
Which is only tangential. But the ultimate answer to a lack of blessing is to go to the One who can bless.
I had tufu last night for dinner, with catsup.
if it wasnt so sad, it would be hilarious. before you laugh, just remember, your taxes will go to pay for these unemployed.
a part of me used to say about changes liberals wanted and the unintended (sometimes intended) consequences, they will see it ...now, no NOW...how about NOW? as i got older i realised, they will never see it. as a Polish friend who lived through the glories of socialist Poland (/s), said, there are 2 types of liberals/socialists, the believers and those who understand it. the people who understand it are those in charge, they realise how much money they can earn telling the believers they are making a difference.
i bet you right now, in that bookstore, the patchouli oil wearing latte sipping believers are there bemoaning how capitalism has failed their bookstore and how if they had socialism they would not need to earn a profit and therefore the store would be open. they believe it, lock , stock and 2 barrels. the reason the bookstore is failing is because of those mouth breathers in the republican/tea/conservative etc etc parties. so you see its YOUR fault as a reader here, you closed that store. they care about the workers, you, you horrible racist, sexist homophobe with your guns and Bibles...its your fault. you have debauched their good star trek like intentions with horrible capitalist things like, profit and something called loss.
They simply dont see that the guy running amazon LOVES this law, loves it because it lays waste to all small competition before them clearing the field of niche players driving them to where...amazon. the cost on him of this change is minute in comparison. its why big liberal companies love big government the have orgasms over laws like this. politicians love it because Jeff Bezos in amazon will fill their purses with support while the morons in the bookstore, well...suck it up you nerds, its for the greater good.
here is the kicker, the only way a liberal changes is when they have a truly personal WTF moment. you cant tell them that they have to experience it. IMHO, that happens when for no reason the result of their actions hit them square in the face. i would say if there were 20 workers in that store, we will be lucky if one will see the reality, and then trying to see that reality in the toxic soup of 19 others who have decided they simply didnt believe enough and they need to march instead. sorry to be so depressing, but they simply wont see it they way you and i do...
It should not surprise anyone that they brought a lot of diseases with them

I am a life-long bookkeeper. I can rarely make any headway with trying to explain the ultimate cost of a minimum wage at any level.
When someone keeps sticking to their ideas & then wanting me to do their bookkeeping, I tell them NO.
You don’t need a bookkeeper-—you won’t be in business long enough for it to be necessary. However, you will need an auctioneer to sell all the equipment, etc., that you have purchased to set up your business. Then you will need a bankruptcy lawyer for the rest of your assets.
You wouldn’t believe the looks I get.
Now that's funny!
Bookstore can't spell "principle."
Ms Rand covered that in "Atlas Shrugged"!
Historical aspect of MEASLES on the people of Hawaii:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19633516
“The imported epidemics of infections including measles diminished Hawaii’s population from approximately 300,000 at Captain Cook’s arrival in 1778 to 135,000 in 1820 and 53,900 in 1876.
The measles deaths of the(Hawaiian)king and queen in London in 1824, likely acquired visiting a large children’s home, was a harbinger of the devastating impact of measles upon Hawaiians 24 years later with its first arrival to the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands.”
