Records show the National Security Agency data center in Utah used more water in 2014, though the usage is still far lower than expected. The water usage peaked at 6.6 million gallons for the month of August.

Well, I don't care how important the work they do there is; if fish no one ever heard of of more important than farmers, they're definitely more important than spying on the taxpayers.
They cut off all the water to the farmers in California. But we have plenty of desert water for the NSA.
They have to be cooling/chilling the water first before they use it to cool the computers.
Circulate it out, take most of the heat out with big radiators and fans, re-chill the cooled water, pump it back in to cool the computers, closed loop system, basically no water loss.
Can't believe they're just flushing that water down the drain, don't make too much sense, all it did was get warm.
The company I worked for, 25 years ago started using a closed loop system to cool our mobile mainframes, but we used antifreeze and a chiller unit, more efficient than using water.

You must get your mind right, comrade, on The Greater Good or quite likely find yourself cooling in Room 101, then vaporized into the stratosphere like a paper dropped into a memory hole.
If you have a large volume of water available for cooling it’s called pump and dump. You use the water, it cools the heat exchanger and then you simply discharge it.
The water will eventually disapate the heat it has collected. Coolers or chillers are expensive to run and also require water treatment.
I’m probably missing something technical. But it sure seems like an obvious question to bring up for a laymen if one is going to report on this, right? Even if you just say ‘the authorities had no comment about what happens to the water afterwards. The experts we contacted are baffled as to the final destination of the water, and couldn’t even speculate.’ I mean if the point is to be outraged by this water consumption, why not spell it out if the water is just poured into the ground or whatever?

Seems like a closed loop system would have been, the byproduct of heated water used , harvested to produce electricity to augment or provide total needs of the equipment or at least the facility. Can goobermint architects , planners be so stupid or is water used just dumped back into the reservoir or underground aquifers .....?
If it’s just in the community loop and rotational use with zero loss due cooling only ......then not a real issue is it ?

I can almost visualize, since it's the "goobermint" and especially the NSA wanting this up and running as fast as possible, the water being pumped down the proverbial "rat hole" in a whoo-pee for us, screw you fashion :)
