We are getting to the point in the 2016 election cycle -- three months old literally, older than time itself in figurative terms -- at which we can start watching polls to see what trends are emerging. Over the weekend, Pollster.com's Charles Franklin explored one way of comparing polls that we thought was worth exploring a bit deeper.
The link above goes to a version of this chart, which compares the October results of a Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll of likely Iowa Republican caucus-goers with the results from a poll from the same pair released over the weekend.
The key part of the graph is the dotted line. Any (possible) candidate above that line improved since October; the percentage of the vote he received is higher than what he got in October. (They are all "he"s.) Below the line, and the percentage dropped. The further from the line, the bigger the effect.
We'll skip the obvious for a second to note the subtle changes. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney did a bit worse this time around, as did Ben Carson. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) did quite a bit better, as did former Florida governor Jeb Bush. But Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker! he gained 11 points, almost certainly in part thanks to a strong performance at a forum there last month.

Iowa has 99 counties that you have to have people in and do retail campaigning, so a poll like this means less than nothing.
And a caucus system where nothing is decided in the first round means that people must be motivated to follow through to the next level, not just think you’re a good guy and cast an easy single vote.
Walker needs to clarify his position on amnesty, in state tuition for illegal aliens and deportation of illegals before he gets any support from this voter.
Exactly. I worked two presidential campaigns while I lived there, among other things. It’s the exact opposite of a big state primary.
Early surges are not good. They imply possible early peaking, then dropping back.
The GOP should keep its powder dry and not allow the MSM to trash potential candidates.
It is the weak part of his boat that the GOPe and the Left will sink him with.
I dont think Walker’s supporters on FR quite grasp this.
For you to consider...
Wisconsin’s Scott Walker Joins Immigration Lawsuit
Walker joined with Texas Gov. Abbott in a lawsuit to block obuma’s illegal immigration diktate.
Walker needs to speak out on ISIS, tell the world that he will take them down.
Guaranteed win.
he will not deport. he’s toast. maybe in 30 yrs.
did WI refuse to appeal the homo “marriage” ruling?
“did WI refuse to appeal the homo marriage ruling?”
I’m not playing whack-a-mole with you. I addressed a concern that RginTN voiced.
He understands The Left in this country. I am not sure how he acquired his knowledge, maybe he grew up listening to Rush, but he knows their sinister nature and their underhanded tactics.
There is no other candidate that has had to fight the Liberal Mob Mentality, including many death threats.
He knows that one of his biggest assets is his quiet controlled almost somnolent exterior. But he prefers to be characterized and underestimated as a “boring” or “uncharismatic” person while he continues his march to POTUS.
He knows the stakes are extremely high for America and his young daughters. He wants them to grow up in an America that he knew. An America that was characterized by closeness of Family, Loving compassionate Christian values, with pride in achievement and a responsibility for self reliance.
That's who Scott Walker is, and am predicting and praying for his continued ascendancy. The pollster's, the analysts, the Amnesty Blowhard Naysayers will continie to try to explain and understand his rise. They should all just watch and appreciate and be thankful that this fine American man was here, when he was needed most. May God Bless and Protect Scott Walker and his family.
Why should Walker go so deeply into the issues when no one else is doing so? Give him a bit of time. He has not yet declared himself a candidate for 2016 POTUS election.
Walker is the Mule in the leftist
universe
Thanks for the reasoned opinion piece you wrote about Scott Walker.
Only one error I found. Scott and Tonette have two sons, no daughters,
