WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits tumbled last week to its lowest level in nearly 15 years, adding to bullish signals on the labor market.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 43,000 to a seasonally adjusted 265,000 for the week ended Jan. 24, the lowest since April 2000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. It was the biggest weekly decline since November 2012.
The drop, which far exceeded economists' expectations for a fall to only 300,000, probably exaggerates the strength of the jobs market as the data included the Martin Luther King holiday, which means fewer claims were likely processed.
It unwound the prior weeks' increases, which had pushed claims above the key 300,000 threshold. Economists had largely dismissed that rise as "noise," noting difficulties adjusting the data for seasonal fluctuations at the start of the year.

So, I’m guessing with a new quarter in a new year, somehow a massive amount of “those formerly actively looking for jobs” rolled off that list.
People who gave up and/or fell off the cliff of eligibility? Barack Obama really needs a Bureau of Misleading Numbers. Oh wait, he has one already.
Anyone who actually believes Federal statistics six years into the Obama administration is delusional.
Fantasy numbers parroted by fake journalists.
Just remember: you’re not unemployed. You’re out of the job market.
Say, not to rain on your parade or anything, Lucia, but what did the labor participation rate rise to? Where does that number stand in relation to 15 years ago?
Oh, and also, if it's not too much trouble, what is the food stamps participation rate? As compared to 15 years ago, that is.
It’s a question of what “is” is. That’s all. This statistic was already set up to be meaningless way before Barack Obama became an oaf of office.
Wow. I’m impressed these stats were released on time what with The Blizzard of the Millenia shutting everything down and all that.
Wasn't that magical threshold a lot lower during the Bush years?
......... until the adjustment to the real numbers on Friday.
Yeah, and the polar ice caps have melted too!
Lies, Lies, Lies....All Lies
All anyone has to do is count that actual number of people employed.
I’ll save you the time. It’s almost 100 million less than 2009.
But the media will never tell you that.
More small and medium-sized businesses are dying than new ones being born.
Worst in 35 years.
I recently posted a notice that the WH was going to change methods to calculate economic indicators. It said the new data will not be able to be compared to the old data.
Benefits ran out.
There are plenty who do believe. Even on Fox I keep hearing about our economy being in recovery and no one challenges the bogus claims and statistics.
add: Free from Job Lock
Oy, that’s not what this measures. It’s first time after a job loss, not running out of benefits.
Once you hit a floor you can’t get much lower.

I rely on this source for realistic labor & economic numbers:

Real unemployment in Dec 2014 is 23% using <1983 calculation methodology.
I can not E’ffing believe no one in the MSM has the decency to dig deeper and report truth of these numbers and what the worst presidency in US history has done to this country.
